2 die in a northern Iowa crash Friday night

(Wright County, IA) – Two people from the Wright County town of Belmond died Friday night, during a collision south of Belmond. The Iowa State Patrol reports a 2000 Ford Ranger pickup truck driven by 65-year-old Michael Thomas Mickelson, was traveling south on Highway 69 at around 7:25-p.m., when Mickelson made an illegal U-turn near 200th Street.

His pickup was struck by a southbound 2014 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup that was driven by 25-year-old Alan Hefti, of Dows (IA). Thomas Mickelson – who was wearing a seat belt, and his 71-year-old passenger, Ellen Kay Countryman – who was not buckled-up – died at the scene of the crash.

The Patrol was assisted by the Wright County Sheriff’s Office, Belmond Fire and EMS, and Belond Police. The crash remains under investigation.
