ISU Professor in Critical Condition, Accused in Wife’s Murder

Ames police say an Iowa State University professor is hospitalized after shooting himself while trying to avoid arrest for the murder of his wife. Radio Iowa’s Matt Kelley reports:

During a welfare check on Thursday, officers found the body of 47-year-old Kristen Stone in a house in Ames. Police identified her husband, 47-year-old Richard Stone, as the suspect in the murder. On Friday afternoon, Stone was spotted in his car and when he was pulled over, police say he shot himself before he could be taken into custody. He was taken to a Des Moines hospital for treatment, where reports say he was listed in critical condition. Stone is an engineering professor at I-S-U and was also a reserve deputy for the Story County Sheriff’s Office.
