(Des Moines, IA) – The latest Swimming Advisory list from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources shows swimming is not recommended at 11 of Iowa’s public beaches this weekend. Most on this week’s list showed high levels of E.Coli, which is an indicator of other potentially harmful bacteria in the water, or algal toxin.
Beaches where swimming is not recommended this week include:
- Backbone Beach in Delaware County
- Big Creek Beach in Polk County
- Black Hawk Beach in Sac County
- Crandalls Beach in Dickinson County
- Denison Beach in Sac County
- Emerson Bay Beach in Dickinson County
- Lake Darling Beach in Washington County
- Nine Eagles Beach in Decatur County
- Pleasant Creek Beach in Linn County
- Prairie Rose Beach in Shelby County
- Union Grove Beach in Tama County
The DNR tests 40-some beaches each week between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend. Sampling and testing happen during the week, with the results going online on the AQuIA website Friday mornings.
