Garage fire Sunday evening in Cumberland

(Cass County, IA) – A garage and its entire contents were a total loss following a fire late Sunday evening, in Cumberland. According to reports, the blaze at 121 Jackson Street was reported at around 7-p.m. The structure was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived on the scene. The flames were so hot, they began to melt the siding on the residence nearby.

Crews spread water on the side of the house closest to the garage, and concentrated the rest of their efforts on containing the garage fire. With assistance from firefighters from Massena, the flames were quickly knocked-down.

Officials said there were some propane tanks inside the garage that exploded during the fire, but no one was injured. In addition to the garage itself, the loss included some tools and a couple of ATV’s. The cause of the fire was under investigation. Crews returned to their station by around 8:15-p.m.
