Fiery, fatal collision in northern IA Friday evening

(Emmet County, IA) – A collision Friday evening between a pickup truck and a semi tractor-box trailer west of Estherville, resulted in one person dead and another injured. According to the Iowa State Patrol, a 1996 GMC pickup driven by 41-year-old John James Bumgart, of Armstrong, was traveling west on Highway 9, east of 410th Avenue, when it crossed the center line of the road and struck an eastbound 2020 Peterbilt semi, driven by 50-year-old Karie Marie Eisma, of Hawarden. The accident happened at around 6:42-p.m.

Following the collision, the pickup entered the north ditch and the semi entered the south ditch where it burst into flames and became fully engulfed. The Patrol says John Bumgart died at scene. He was not wearing a seat belt. Karie Eisma was wearing a seat belt. She was injured and transported by Estherville Ambulance to a local hospital.
