An historic park in Dubuque is getting a much-needed facelift thanks to a 750-thousand dollar grant to restore buildings. City planner Chris Happ Olson says architect Alfred Caldwell designed Dubuque’s Eagle Point Park when he came to the city as part of the New Deal programs.
The architect Caldwell went on to a storied career in Chicago and the park is now on the National Register of Historic Places. But Dubuque residents say it’s fallen into disrepair. Parks Director Matt Kalcevich (CAL-suh-vich) says the grant could change that.
The grant from the Jeffris Family Foundation comes with a two-to-one match, so the city must raise an additional one and a half million dollars in the next three years to secure it. The city hopes to do so through private donations and federal grants.
