Concerns mount over emissions from proposed Linn County gas plant

Linn County is considering a new gas plant west of Cedar Rapids, which environmentalists say would reverse the progress the county has made toward reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Grant Nordby, who serves on the Linn County sustainability and resiliency advisory committee, says the proposed Morgan Valley Energy Center is estimated to produce one-and-a-half million metric tons of C-O-2.

In 2010, Linn County set a goal to decrease its carbon dioxide emissions by more than three-and-a-half million metric tons by 2030, and by 2023, it had been able to cut back emissions by one-point-four million metric tons. The committee is asking the county to consider cleaner energy generation methods or a plan for offsetting emissions.
