Bridge Replacement Work on Iowa 48 in Red Oak Begins May 11

RED OAK, Iowa – May 4, 2026 – Officials with the Iowa Department of Transportation report, if you travel on Iowa 48, 1.3 miles south of the intersection with U.S. 34 in Red Oak, you need to be aware of an upcoming construction project that may slow down your trip.

Beginning Monday, May 11th, and continuing until approximately Nov. 25th, weather permitting, crews will work on replacing the Iowa 48 bridge over Red Oak Creek. The work zone on Iowa 48 will be between 2nd Avenue and West Reed Street in Red Oak.

Traffic will be maintained with an opposing traffic pattern that includes temporary rail barrier and a lane separator system. A 9-foot-4-inch lane-width restriction will also be in place during this project.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
