Beware of scammers during storm clean-up efforts

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Iowa Department of Insurance and Financial Services is cautioning Iowans to stay vigilant against scams and contractors exploiting storm relief efforts. It comes as cleanup begins after recent storms. The department advises homeowners to document damage, contact their insurance company quickly, and be cautious of “storm chasers” offering repair work.

Officials also warn against scams involving individuals impersonating insurance representatives or Federal Emergency Management Agency agents. Suspicious activity should be reported to the Iowa Attorney General’s office at 888-777-4590
