A 14-year-old died & 3 others were injured in a Poweshiek County train vs. Semi crash

(Poweshiek County, IA) – The Iowa State Patrol reports teenager died and a man from Missouri was injured, when a semi tractor-trailer was struck by a train Wednesday afternoon, in eastern Iowa’s Poweshiek County. According to the report, a 2015 Kenworth semi driven by 38-year-old Michael Orton, of Palmyra, MO, was traveling south on Highway 21 between the towns of Brooklyn and Victor, when Orton failed to yield to a westbound Iowa Interstate Railroad train.

The semi was struck by the train at around 12:35-p.m. resulting in fatal injuries to a passenger in the semi, 14-year-old Robert Orton, Michael Orton’s son. Michael Orton and two people in the train locomotive were injured. Orton was flown from the scene of UIHC. The railroad employees were treated for minor injuries at a local hospital.

The collision caused the derailment of at least 20 rail-cars. The crash remains under investigation
