(UPDATED 4/8/26) Montezuma, IA – Authorities in southeastern Iowa have released the identities of two people who were found dead inside a submerged vehicle in Poweshiek County over the weekend.
On April 4, the Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a vehicle submerged in a drainage pond north of Lake Silverado in rural Montezuma around 9:00 a.m.
Upon arrival, authorities found the vehicle underwater in the pond with two people inside. Both were pronounced dead and taken to the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office.
Officials identified the victims as 30-year-old Amanda Ray, of Des Moines, and 29-year-old Joshua Carroll, of Montezuma.
The incident remains under investigation.

(Montezuma, IA) – The bodies of two people were discovered inside of a submerged vehicle in east central Iowa, Saturday morning. The Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office was notified at around 9-a.m. that a vehicle was submerged in a drainage pond located just north of Lake Silverado, in rural Montezuma.
Authorities say the bodies of the unidentified individuals were transported to the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office. The incident remained under investigation as of the time of the press release late Saturday evening, with additional details to be released once the investigation is complete.
