1 dead in a fiery eastern IA crash (Updated w/name)

(Clinton County, IA) – A single-vehicle crash in eastern Iowa Wednesday afternoon claimed the life of a 46-year-old woman from Dubuque. The Iowa State Patrol reports the accident happened at around 4-p.m. on 190th Street, near DeWitt.

An investigation determined a 2018 Chevy Pacifica van driven by Trisha Brookins was traveling westbound on 190th, just west of 280th Avenue, when the driver apparently had some sort of a medical episode. The van entered the south ditch, drove through a field, and collided with a house. As a result of the collision, both the vehicle and residence became fully engulfed in flames.

The Patrol says Trisha Brookins died at the scene. DeWitt Community School District officials say Brookins was a middle school teacher in the district. District officials said they are supporting students, staff and families through counseling services, resources and other measures.

The crash remains under investigation. Agencies assisting at the scene included the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, and the DeWitt, Shelton and Charlotte Fire Departments, as well as the Clinton County Medical Examiner.
