(Greenfield, IA) – The Adair County Sheriff’s Department reports a man was arrested March 15th following an investigation into an incident where a woman who authorities say was his girlfriend, was struck by a vehicle. 33-year-old Cristian Ortiz, of Adair, faces charges that include Willful Injury with Bodily Injury, Domestic Abuse Assault with Bodily Injury-1st offense. Kidnapping in the 3rd Degree, and Reckless Driving. His cash-only bond at the Adair County Jail was set at $25,000
According to the Sheriff’s report, Deputies, Adair Rescue and Adair County EMS were dispatched to a tavern in the 300 block of Audubon Street in Adair, where a woman had reported by hit by an SUV. Ortiz was identified as having been the driver of the vehicle.
During the investigation, Ortiz told Deputies he was trying to get his son, and that the boy was missing. The female victim, who suffered multiple bruises during the incident, told authorities Ortiz had asked her to pick up his son from a local gas station/convenience store, and was upset. She took the child to a friend’s house to keep him safe while Ortiz was upset.
The woman said that while she was driving Ortiz, he allegedly assaulted her and demanded to know where his son was. She stopped and got out of the vehicle, after which Ortiz took the SUV. The Sheriff’s report says that as the victim walked back to the gas station, the vehicle Ortiz was driving hit her and pinned the woman to a bridge before running her over when she fell to the ground. Ortiz then grabbed the woman and pulled her back into the SUV. The victim called 911 and was able to get out of the vehicle, and attempted to make it to the bar on Audubon Street, because she thought there would be witnesses present.
She said while she was walking toward the bar, Ortiz was circling in the vehicle and she thought he was going to come at her again. The bar’s staff came outside to help the woman. They told Deputies Ortiz had been inside and had a drink, prior to the incident.
