Griswold School District tax levy will be lower than patrons were told

(Griswold, IA) – A public hearing was held Monday night as part of the Griswold School District’s Board of Education meeting. Superintendent Dave Henrichs said the good news coming out of that hearing, was the tax levy asking will be less than what district patrons were initially told.

The original notice listed the tax levy at $12.68 per thousand dollars valuation, but the updated and accurate rate is $12.15.

As a result, District patrons will pay about $60,000 less in taxes than they did the previous year. A second public hearing on the budget will be held April 20th at 5:30-p.m. The Board also held a hearing on the proposed 2026-27 School Year Calendar, which includes a start date of Monday, August 24th. The Board approved the Calendar as presented. The Griswold School Board approved also, three resignations and one new hire.

Dave Henrichs said also, the Griswold School District will not be implementing a four-day school week for the 2026-27 School Year, because of the timing of surveys taken and those yet to be conducted, including a staff survey set to be administered on April 1st.

He said there is the possibility that make take place “down the road.” As part of the Budget, the Griswold School Board passed a Resolution to make an advance payment of $290,000 on the General Obligation (G.O.) Bond which was passed in 2017 to construct the new Elementary Building, and which allows the District to save money on interest.

The Board concluded their meeting Monday with an Exempt session for contract negotiations.
