Cass County Supervisors pass 5-year road construction plan & 2 bridge project agreements

(Atlantic, IA) – The Cass County Board of Supervisors held a Special Meeting this (Tuesday) morning, in Atlantic. During the session, the Board passed a Resolution approving the Cass County Secondary Roads Five-Year Construction Program for Fiscal Years 2027-2031.

Prior to diving in to the specifics of the plan, Cass County Engineer Trent Wolken spoke of the closure next week by the Iowa DOT of the Iowa Highway 92 bridge over the West Fork of the Nodaway River (1.6 miles east of Adair County Road N-51, near Bridgewater). The Iowa Department of Transportation complete bridge closure project begins Monday, April 6th and is expected to last through late October. A marked detour utilizing Iowa 148, Adair County roads G-61 and N-72, and Iowa 92 will be in place.

Wolken said the County has an aggressive road construction plan for the next five-years that amounts to over $8-million worth of work. He said there’s no guarantee they’ll get all the projects in during the five-year time span, but they will try. Supervisor Mark O’Brien asked Wolken why there was more cost expected to be incurred n some years than others. (Pictured: Trent Wolken [lower center] discusses the County 5-year road plan)

Some of the projects will fall under maintenance, rather than full-blown construction. Wolken says he’s working on an asphalt resurfacing patching and maintenance plan. In other business, the Cass County Board of Supervisors also approved to Federal-aid Agreements for bridge projects on the Nishna Valley Road, over Indian Creek, and on 710th Street, over Eller Creek.

The bridge over Indian Creek north of Lewis (East of “Iranistan”) is a high truss style and saw extra wear when there was a detour while Highway 6 was being worked on. The bridge over Eller Creek is located southeast of Wiota (southeast of the County shed).

The Board’s next REGULAR meeting is on April 7th, beginning at 9-a.m.
