ST. LOUIS (AP) — David Freese homered, doubled and drove in three runs, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 5-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Thursday night. Adam Dunn tied Texas’ Josh Hamilton for the major league home run lead with his 22nd, a three-run shot in the sixth that pulled the White Sox to 5-3. St. Louis had scored one run in three straight games coming in and no more than two in each of the last five. Cardinals starter Jake Westbrook (5-6) retired the first 12 batters on 41 pitches before giving up a leadoff single in the fifth inning to Paul Konerko, who leads the American League with a .364 average. Westbrook threw only 67 pitches in six innings, allowing five hits and three runs.

Chiefs’ defense ends offseason program in style

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs’ defense will carry bragging rights into next months’ training camp. During a mock 2-minute drill to finish up their mandatory three-day minicamp Thursday, the defense stuffed the Kansas City offense, forcing a long field goal that kicker Ryan Succop missed wide left. The defense then turned around and stuffed the backup offense.  It was precisely the kind of spirited end to voluntary workouts and the minicamp that coach Romeo Crennel wanted to see. Crennel said he was encouraged by the amount of progress Kansas City has made the past few weeks, particularly in learning a new offensive system. He believes the Chiefs are well-positioned to hit the ground running when training camp starts in St. Joseph, Mo.

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Michael Wacha, the St. Louis Cardinals’ top pick in the draft, visited Busch Stadium after he signed his contract earlier Thursday.  The right-pitcher from Texas A&M was the No. 19 overall pick in the draft. Wacha was taken with the pick the Cardinals earned as compensation from the Angels for the free-agent departure of Albert Pujols over the winter.

The 6-foot-6, 200-pound Wacha flew Wednesday to St. Louis. He took his physical and passed the medical exams before he signed his contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.  The 20-year-old recently completed his junior season at Texas A&M. He finished with a 9-1 record and a 2.06 ERA. He struck out 116 in 113 1-3 innings.

Carpenter throws off mound first time since injury

Sports

June 14th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter took a step forward in rehabbing a shoulder injury that has sidelined him all season, throwing off a mound for the first time. The 2006 NL Cy Young winner threw 26 pitches Wednesday several hours before the Cardinals played the Chicago White Sox. He’s scheduled to throw again Friday, then a few more times next week. The Cardinals are hopeful Carpenter, who was 11-9 last season and then went 4-0 in the postseason for the World Series champions, can return sometime after the All-Star break. Carpenter broke down in spring training with a nerve-related ailment that sapped strength in his throwing shoulder, after throwing 273 1-3 innings in the 2011 regular season and postseason. The 37-year-old Carpenter said the intensity level was comparable to a session prior to the team reporting for spring training in mid-February. The right-hander said everything feels fine and is guardedly optimistic he’ll pitch this season.

Chiefs put TE Rucker on injured reserve

June 14th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have placed backup tight end Martin Rucker on injured reserve with a right knee injury that will require surgery. The Chiefs made the move official Wednesday while in the midst of a three-day minicamp. Rucker hurt his knee during one of the Chiefs’ voluntary offseason workouts June 1. He was signed as a free agent to provide depth behind Tony Moeaki, who is returning from a torn left ACL that knocked him out during last preseason. Rucker is a former fourth-round draft pick out of the Cleveland Browns, where current Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel had served as head coach. Rucker played in 12 games with the Browns, Cowboys and Jaguars over the past four seasons. He had two catches for 17 yards.

Lance Lynn wins 10th, Cardinals edge White Sox 1-0

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Lance Lynn struck out a career-high 12 to stay tied for the major league lead in wins and Carlos Beltran hit his NL-best 19th home run Wednesday night, sending the St. Louis Cardinals to a 1-0 victory over the White Sox that ended Chicago’s eight-game road winning streak. Beltran homered in the third inning off Jake Peavy (6-2) and had three of the four hits for the Cardinals, who have scored only seven runs in the last five games and totaled a single run for the third straight game. They’ve won just five of 14. Lynn (10-2) allowed three hits in 7 1-3 innings and joined Mets knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, who threw a one-hitter at Tampa Bay earlier in the night, as the only 10-game winners in the majors.
