Where have all the passing yards gone in Big Ten?

Sports

September 19th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — This was supposed to be a year the Big Ten went airborne. Seven of the top 10 passing quarterbacks from 2011 were back, as were nine of the 12 primary starters under center. Blame it on injuries, on graduation losses, on hybrid signal-callers or parity, but the Big Ten isn’t flying all that high. More conference teams rank in the bottom 25 in the nation in passing than the top 50. And that won’t change much once league play begins.

Lohse wins 15th, Cardinals beat Astros 4-1

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Kyle Lohse threw seven scoreless innings for his 15th victory and contributed an RBI double as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Houston Astros 4-1 Tuesday night to stay in front for the second NL wild card. Fernando Abad (0-5) had a career-best six strikeouts in the Astros’ 100th loss. They’re 8-8 this month under interim manager Tony DeFrancesco and need nine wins in the final 14 games to avoid topping last season’s franchise-record 106 losses. Daniel Descalso got a key early RBI and Jon Jay had two hits and two RBIs for the Cardinals, coming off a 2-5 trip but with a favorable upcoming schedule with the next eight against lowly Houston and Chicago. With 14 games to play the defending World Series champions are 1½ games ahead of the Dodgers, rained out at Washington, and 2½ games ahead of the Brewers.

Groundbreaking anticipated in mid-November

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals anticipate breaking ground on Ballpark Village, long delayed by the economic downturn, in mid-November. The $100 million first phase of the development is scheduled for completion by opening day in 2014. The announcement Tuesday followed approval by the Missouri Development Finance Board, one of the final steps in the approval process. Team president William DeWitt III called it a “significant milestone in a long journey to make Ballpark Village a reality.” The project has hit several snags since the new Busch Stadium opened in 2006 and the space is now a concrete parking lot. The first phase will feature 100,000 square feet of retail and entertainment space along Clark Street next to Busch Stadium. The price tag for the seven-block $700 million mixed use project.

Iowa walk-on Weisman steps in at running back

Sports

September 18th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa sophomore fullback Mark Weisman is set to make his first start at tailback on Saturday when the Hawkeyes (2-1) host Central Michigan (1-1) in their final nonconference game of the season. Starting running back Damon Bullock is doubtful with a head injury, and freshman Greg Garmon could miss the game with an arm injury. Weisman had 113 yards rushing and three touchdowns after Bullock and Garmon left last week’s 27-16 win over Northern Iowa. Coach Kirk Ferentz says Weisman runs with a different tempo that Iowa’s other backs, adding that he was encouraged by Weisman’s performance against the Panthers.

UNI’s James suspended for first 3 games of season

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) – Northern Iowa senior guard Anthony James, the leading returning scorer for the Panthers, has been suspended for the first three games of the upcoming season.    Northern Iowa coach Ben Jacobson announced Tuesday that James is suspended for violating team and athletic department policies.  Jacobson says he’s disappointed for James, but adds that the situation has been put behind the team. James averaged 12.5 points per game for Northern Iowa in 2011-12. He’ll miss games against Wartburg, Toledo and North Dakota.

September 18th, 2012 by Jim Field

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State University Athletics Department announced today that it has entered into an agreement with the University of Northern Iowa to play football games seven times over the next 11 years.

UNI will play in Ames during the 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2023 seasons. The Panthers last played in Ames during the 2011 season.

“We are excited to extend our contract with UNI because our games have been some of the best attended contests in Jack Trice Stadium history,” said Iowa State Athletics Director Jamie Pollard. “Our fans have enjoyed this intrastate series.”

Iowa State and UNI have met 27 times since the two schools first faced one another in 1899. Iowa State leads the series, 20-4-3, with the Cyclones winning seven of the last eight meetings.

U-P Railroad issues advisory to hunters

Ag/Outdoor, Sports

September 18th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

Officials with the Union Pacific Railroad are urging hunters to resist the temptation to hunt on railroad property this season. Wildlife will migrate and feed along the edges of freshly harvested fields, making these areas prime hunting spots. With many fields adjacent to Union Pacific tracks, hunters find it very tempting to hunt on or near the tracks.

Robert Morrison, Union Pacific Chief of Police says “Too many people have been injured or killed trespassing on railroad property over the years.” Morrison says a part of the “UP CARES” initiative, they want to remind hunters that “Walking on or near railroad tracks is extremely dangerous because you never know when a train will come along.”

Dale Bray, Union Pacific director of public safety says “It can take a mile or more to stop a train, and, by the time a locomotive engineer sees you on the track, it is too late to stop.” Bray says “Locomotives and rail cars overhang the tracks by at least three feet on either side of the rail. If you are too close to the tracks, you can be hit by the locomotive or a rail car.”

Hunters are not the only ones drawn to railroad tracks – hikers, bikers, fishermen and snowmobilers are, as well. Anyone choosing to walk on or near railroad tracks could be killed or injured by a train, and, people who enter railroad property can be arrested for violating trespassing laws.  They could serve jail time and/or have to pay a fine.
