Iowa’s pheasant numbers have fallen far over the years

Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

January 8th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

A new report finds the size of Iowa’s pheasant population has fallen 83-percent since the mid-1990s due to disappearing habitat and a series of harsh winters. Kevin Baskins, a spokesman for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says habitat loss alone would have meant only a 26-percent drop in pheasant numbers. “You kind of have an exponential effect when you have declining habitat combined with harsh winters because they have no cover to escape the conditions they’re facing,” Baskins says. “We’ve had several winters in a row with above-average snowfall.”

A milder winter a year ago, combined with the summer-long drought, helped the pheasant population somewhat. Baskins says the habitat loss combined with several severe winters is making it harder for pheasant chicks to survive. “The other big influence we have weatherwise is when we get into colder and wetter springs,” he says. “The chicks, when they’re hatching, if they’re exposed to those conditions, they succumb to the elements. They don’t have as high a survival rates when we get into the colder and wetter conditions after first hatching.”

Baskins says Iowa lost more than a million acres of habitat between 1996 and 2010. He says higher corn prices prompted many farmers to plow up land that normally would serve as habitat for the birds. Bob-white quail numbers are also in decline. The numbers come from the DNR’s 2013 report on the pheasant population.

Chiefs introduce Andy Reid as new head coach

Sports

January 8th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Andy Reid has been introduced as the new coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, one week after he was fired following 14 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. Reid was joined by Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt and several other team officials at a packed news conference at Arrowhead Stadium. Reid takes over for Romeo Crennel, who joined Reid and five other NFL coaches in losing their jobs last Monday.

Reid took the Eagles to the Super Bowl and won 130 games over his career. But things had soured the past couple seasons and he was dismissed after going 4-12. He takes over a team that went 2-14, matching the worst finish in Chiefs history. That means the Chiefs pick first in the NFL draft for the first time.

Cyclones prepare for next level

Sports

January 7th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

Several Iowa State football players saw their college season come to an end in the New Year’s Eve bowl game loss to Tulsa, but several are likely to continue their football careers at the next level. Defensive lineman, Jake McDonough of Urbandale overcame injuries to play at I-S-U, and now is looking forward to the next step.  “I will be training from here on out, and then I’ll have an internship to finish out my college career. I’ll graduate in May, and then hopefully I can pursue my career in the N-F-L,” McDonough says.

Jake Knott had to watch the last part of his senior season from the sidelines after an injury, but is happy the way it turned out overall. “First of all I’ve just been luck to be surrounded by the people I have been, the coaching and all that. In this day and age in college football to have the same coach and head coach for four years straight is awesome and says a lot about where the program is headed,” Knott says. While Knott will now try to make it into the N-F-L, his brother is preparing to try and fill his spot on the Cyclone defense.

Knott says his brother has been playing the linebacker position since mid-season and has impressed him with what he has done. He says it will be interesting to see how his brother or anyone else who steps into the position does next season. It will be a big hole in the defense to fill, as Knott’s runningmate at linebacker, A-J Klein, is also graduating expected to be an N-F-L prospect.
