Northern Iowa beats George Mason 82-77 in OT

December 8th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) — Marc Sonnen connected on seven 3-pointers and had 21 points to lead Northern Iowa to an 82-77 overtime victory over George Mason, snapping Patriots’ 14-game home winning streak. Anthony James scored five of his 19 points in overtime and Seth Tuttle hit six straight free throws in the game’s final 22 seconds to seal the victory for the Panthers (6-3). Tuttle finished with 18 points, going 12-for-14 from the foul line.

George Mason (6-4) got 20 points from Sherrod Wright, but was undone by some costly miscues and inconsistent play from point guards Bryon Allen and Corey Edwards. They combined for 21 points but also had eight turnovers between them. George Mason trailed 80-77 before Allen committed a turnover with three seconds remaining in overtime. The Patriots’ Johnny Williams was forced to immediately foul Tuttle, who hit his final two free throws to provide the final margin.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Chris Hines scored 19 points and Ben Simons added 15, leading Drake to a 74-64 victory over IPFW on Saturday night in the first-ever meeting between the schools. Hines and Simon hit three 3-pointers apiece. Jordan Clarke added nine points and 11 rebounds for the Bulldogs (4-4), who went ahead for good, 31-29, on Richard Carter’s layup 2:20 before halftime and led by as many as 16 in the second half.

Frank Gaines, who came in averaging 19.2 points per game, had a game-high 27 on 8-of-17 shooting for the Mastodons (5-6), and Michael Kibiloski chipped in 10 points off the bench. IPFW shot just 36 percent from the floor and committed 21 turnovers. Drake never trailed, but IPFW tied it at 29 late in the first half. The Bulldogs, though, closed the half on a 10-0 run before Clarke’s layup just after halftime made it 41-29.

Chiefs Roster Moves

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Chiefs have released offensive lineman Hayworth Hicks and elevated wide receiver Josh Bellamy from the practice squad to the 53-man roster for Sunday’s game at Cleveland.

Bellamy joined the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in April and has been a member of the practice squad all season. He played in 26 games in two seasons at Louisville, where he caught 53 passes for 681 yards.

Hicks was claimed off waivers by the Chiefs on Nov. 29 when there were a number of injuries to their offensive line. He was inactive for last Sunday’s win over Carolina, which snapped Kansas City’s eight-game skid.

Hicks has also spent time with the Colts and Jets this season.

Man loses finger in Madison County hunting accident

Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

December 7th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

A man hunting deer in Madison County Wednesday south of Truro was injured while using an unconventional weapon. Iowa Department of Natural Resources spokesman, Kevin Baskins, says the accident involved a 69-year-old man from Cumming. “In this particular instance we had a gentleman who was on a stand and took a shot at a deer when the muzzleloader he was using exploded,” Baskins says. The man identified as Theodore Larson lost a thumb in the explosion.

“He was unable to find his thumb after the gun exploded,” Baskins says. He says Larson was unable to find his thumb and was eventually flown to a Des Moines hospital for treatment. Baskins says the muzzleloaders are often new reproduction guns that are still loaded in the old way. Baskins is not sure what type of gun Larson was using, but said they will try to find out why it exploded. “Our officers are experts at looking at these firearms and being able to examine what’s left of the gun to determine what may’ve happened to make it perform that way,” he says.

Baskins says the muzzleloader shotgun season overlaps with the regular shotgun season. He does not believe there have been that many problems with the oldstyle weapons. “I think it’s an unusual case. It’s not unheard of and that’s obviously one of the reasons why we want to further investigate and determine why that gun did perform the way it did,” according to Baskins.

Baskins says the accident happened around five in the evening and Larson was likely airlifted to the hospital because it was the quickest way at that time of day to get him in for treatment.
