Chiefs Trying to Find Offense Before Regular Season

Sports

August 29th, 2011 by Jim Field

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Todd Haley has complete confidence the Kansas City Chiefs can figure out a way to get their offense going in the right direction.  Even if they  manage to score once in a while going the wrong way.  The Chiefs’ high-profile starters struggled in their third consecutive preseason defeat Friday night, this time to the St.
Louis Rams. The first team’s only scoring drive came after an interception set up prime field position, and it went one yard backward before Ryan Succop kicked a short field goal.  With one preseason game left, time is running out to get things straightened out.

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Kyle Lohse went a workmanlike five innings for his 100th career win and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates.  Lohse (12-8) gave up four runs, two of them earned. He allowed six hits, struck out four and walked two.  Lohse also put the Cardinals ahead to stay, getting an infield single in the fourth and scoring on Allen Craig’s sacrifice fly for a 5-4 lead.  Pittsburgh has lost four of its last six. The Pirates fell a season-high 18 games behind NL Central-leading Milwaukee.  Lohse became the 36th active pitcher to reach the 100-win mark.  He has 106 losses in his nine-year career.  Jason Motte picked up his first save of the season with a perfect ninth.  Jeff Karstens (9-8) gave up five earned runs in 3 2-3 innings.

Hyde Remains at Safety on Iowa Depth chart

Sports

August 26th, 2011 by Jim Field

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Iowa junior Micah Hyde will start the season as a safety, according to the latest depth chart for the Sept. 3 opener against Tennessee Tech.  Hyde, who played his first two seasons at cornerback, will start at free safety with Collin Sleeper listed at strong safety.  Greg Castillo has earned a starting nod at cornerback in place of Hyde, and sophomore Christian Kirksey is starting at linebacker.  The Hawkeyes will need another week of practice to sort out whether Thomas Nardo or Dominic Alvis will start alongside Mike Daniels at defensive tackle.  Quarterback A.J. Derby and John Wienke are listed as co-backups to James Vandenberg.  The Hawkeyes haven’t disclosed who’ll be returning kicks against the Golden Eagles.

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Next week’s season opener between Iowa State and Northern Iowa won’t be televised.  Iowa State says Thursday that the only option for watching the Sept. 3 game outside of Jack Trice Stadium will be on the school’s website.  The game will mark the sixth time Iowa State has shown games through an exclusive webcast. But the Cyclones say they’ll attempt to show the feed in high-definition through its new scoreboard, which is set to debut during the game.

Cardinals 8, Pirates 4

ST. LOUIS (AP) – David Freese had a go-ahead two-run single in the fifth and Matt Holliday hit a three-run homer, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to an 8-4 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday night.  The Cardinals ended a three-game losing streak and moved within 9 1/2 games of idle Milwaukee in the NL Central.  Pittsburgh lost for the sixth time in nine games.  Freese blooped a bases-loaded hit down the right-field line with one out to put St. Louis in front to stay, 5-4. Allen Craig began the inning with a single. Pittsburgh starter Charlie Morton (9-7) then walked Albert Pujols and Lance Berkman.  Holliday hit a three-run homer in the eighth off reliever Tony Watson.
St. Louis starter Edwin Jackson (10-9) allowed one earned run and struck out two in six innings.
