ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jake Westbrook pitched a five-hit shutout and the St. Louis Cardinals backed him with four home runs Wednesday in routing the Cincinnati Reds 10-0. Jon Jay, Carlos Beltran and Matt Adams homered in a span of seven at-bats off Homer Bailey as the Cardinals took two of three from the NL Central champions. Matt Carpenter added a two-run homer on a four-hit day. Adams homered for the second straight game and added an RBI double and walk.

The Cardinals have dominated the Reds at home the last decade, losing just three of 28 series with two splits. Westbrook (1-1) threw his fourth career shutout, walking four and striking out three.

Hawkeyes excited about RB tandem

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa was plagued by a third consecutive season of running back issues in 2012. Mark Weisman and Damon Bullock were forced into extended action after another mix of injuries and roster turnover. Each subsequently suffered through setbacks of their own as the Hawkeyes stumbled to a 4-8 finish. But Weisman and Bullock showed they’re Big Ten-quality backs when healthy, and Iowa is excited about pairing the bruising Weisman and the speedy Bullock in the same backfield in 2013.

New running backs coach Chris White says the Hawkeyes have to put their best players on the field, which is why the coaches are exploring ways to get Weisman and Bullock involved.

Iowa State: NCAA case started with basketball aide

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State says its discovery of NCAA recruiting violations started when men’s basketball coach Fred Hoiberg ran into an assistant at an AAU basketball game in 2011. The university released the 590-page report Wednesday that it sent to the NCAA last week. The university has asked for a punishment of two years’ probation.

The report says Hoiberg asked assistant Keith Moore why he was present at the game in apparent violation of NCAA rules and whether he’d been contacting recruits. The report says Moore admitted he had, and the university fired him the next day and started an internal investigation. Moore couldn’t immediately be reached.

The report says an audit of telephone and text messaging found “a significant number of recruiting communication violations involving most of its sports programs.”

Coach Ed Den Beste says:
Atlantic wins the Shenandoah Tournament with a score of 296. We were hoping for a good day with the weather. We started at a decent temp but it dropped quickly and drizzle came on. Not a great day to golf, but what a great day to score. Evan Schuler had a great front and a super back nine. -2 in this weather is an amazing score. He finished birdie, birdie. Sam Markham played well. Still looking for that birdie but played a solid 74. Travis Olsen had struggles on the close of the front nine but had a very strong back to score 76. I thought Nick Barry played well with an 81. Sam Renaud had a good front nine but struggled to start. (87). Great round of golf in tough conditions.

Iowa uses new system for boat registrations

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa officials are using a new system for organizing boat registrations in the state. The state Department of Natural Resources says a boat’s registration information, title and decals will be on one document. Registrations will be handled in the county where the boat owner resides. Nonresidents can register in the county where the boat primarily will be used.

Officials encourage owners to bring in their current registration for a renewal, since it includes information that’s needed in the new system. That includes the boat’s make, model, model year, hull identification number, length and width. About 235,000 boats will be registered in April. Registrations are good for three years.

Motte not cleared to throw, may need surgery

ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals closer Jason Motte faces reconstructive elbow surgery if his condition does not improve in the next three weeks or so. Motte, who had a career-high 42 saves last season, has been shut down since late March because of a strained right elbow. He was not cleared to throw after an MRI exam Tuesday didn’t show sufficient improvement.

General manager John Mozeliak said the team should have a good idea by early May whether the 30-year-old Motte would be able to pitch this season. The news comes a day after stand-in closer Mitchell Boggs was charged with six earned runs in one-third of an inning in the Cincinnati Reds’ nine-run ninth inning.

Lynn strikes out 10 as Cardinals top Reds 5-1

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Lance Lynn struck out 10 in six sharp innings and rookie Matt Adams connected for his first career pinch-hit homer as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds 5-1 on Tuesday night. Reds starter Bronson Arroyo (1-1) retired the first 15 batters. The Cardinals broke through in the sixth, with Adams hitting a two-run homer and Allen Craig and Carlos Beltran also driving in runs.

St. Louis bounced back nicely a day after the Reds roughed up the bullpen for nine runs in the ninth inning of a 13-4 rout that made for a sour home opener. Brandon Phillips had a sacrifice fly and Shin-Soo Choo had two hits for Cincinnati. The Reds were held to five hits, ending a run of four consecutive games with double-figure hit totals. Choo has four straight two-hit games.
