Bobcat trapping quota may be lifted

Ag/Outdoor, Sports

April 12th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

An Iowa State University ecologist is unsure how many more people might start hunting bobcats if the Iowa Department of Natural Resources decides to go ahead with a proposal to lift the seasonal quota for the cats. This D-N-R allowed hunters to trap 450 bobcats in Iowa this past season in a limit determined by population data and reproduction rates for the cats. I-S-U professor Bill Clark is one of the people that help gather the data. “I think one of the reasons they chose to propose that is that in practical terms, it’s difficult to regulate,“ Clark says. The season runs until the quota is reached and any bobcats caught after that must be returned to the D-N-R.

“So, one justification in their mind is well, we should just allow the trapper to keep those animals, and if they decide to sell the fur or have a mount made that’s not a waste of the resource,” according to Clark. He says it’s hard to predict if the number of bobcat hunters would increase without a cap, but says he thinks if the season gets out of hand, the D-N-R would reinstate the quota. Clark made his comments on Iowa Public Radio’s “Talk of Iowa” program.

Rookie backup batting .643 for Cardinals

Sports

April 12th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — If St. Louis Cardinals rookie Matt Adams had enough at-bats to qualify for the league leaders, he’d be ahead by nearly 200 points. Since earning one of the final roster spots in spring training, the 24-year-old backup first baseman has maximized just 14 trips to the plate with two homers, seven RBIs and a ridiculous .643 batting average.

Adams’ first career pinch-hit homer was the go-ahead hit in a victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday. He added another two-run homer and RBI double on Wednesday. After Adams made the team, manager Mike Matheny said he’d try to give the former 23rd-round draft pick a couple starts a week. Regular first baseman Allen Craig got a day off Wednesday and also can play the corner outfield spots.

Alford apologizes for handling of Iowa incident

LOS ANGELES (AP) — New UCLA basketball coach Steve Alford is apologizing for the way he handled a sexual assault charge involving a player on his team in 2002 when he coached at Iowa. Alford says he “instinctively and mistakenly” came to the defense of Hawkeyes player Pierre Pierce before he knew all the facts. Pierce pleaded guilty to a charge of assault involving injury. He was kicked off the Iowa team in 2005 after another incident involving an ex-girlfriend.

Alford says he is apologizing for publicly proclaiming Pierce’s innocence before the legal process had run its course. He says his reaction was inappropriate and insensitive to the female victim. Alford says he’s learned and grown from that experience, and he wants the UCLA community to know that he would handle the situation differently today.

Alford made his comments in a statement distributed Thursday through UCLA.

Iowa Senate bill would allow ATV road travel

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A measure that would permit the use of all-terrain vehicles on some roads is gaining support in the Iowa Legislature. The Senate Transportation Subcommittee approved the bill Thursday and moved it to the full Senate Ways and Means Committee. It earlier passed the House in a 75 to 22 vote.

The bill would require those who want to drive an ATV on county roads to register for a small fee with the state Department of Transportation. ATVs would not be permitted on highways except on designated crossings. Cities could allow the ATVs on certain highways within their jurisdiction. Critics of the bill say ATVs aren’t made for road travel and passing the law could increase the potential for accidents.

Des Moines focused on landing ’20 Olympic Trials

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Officials in Des Moines say they’re focused on landing the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials in track and field after learning the 2016 event is returning to Eugene, Ore. The city made no secret of the fact that it had hoped to lure the 2016 trials to renovated Drake Stadium. But it was announced Thursday that the event will instead return to Eugene for the third time in a row.

City spokesman Greg Edwards says that Des Moines respects USA Track and Field’s decision and believes it is “in the running” for the 2020 meet. Des Moines had positioned itself for strong consideration. Drake hosted the 2010 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships and will do so again in June, and the stadium also had the last two NCAA championships.

Experts: Iowa St likely to see more NCAA sanctions

News, Sports

April 11th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

Two NCAA compliance experts say Iowa State is likely to face sanctions beyond what the school has already imposed for major recruiting contact violations.  Expert John Infante said Thursday he wouldn’t be surprised if men’s basketball coach Fred Hoiberg received a suspension for one to three games next season because of an NCAA push to hold head coaches accountable for what happens in their programs.

Infante said it was possible the university would lose a small number of scholarships in men’s basketball and football. Another expert, Ohio University professor David Ridpath, doubts the school will lose scholarships but won’t be surprised if Hoiberg is suspended.

Both experts said the NCAA could also further punish football and men’s basketball assistants who made improper recruiting calls by limiting their contact with prospects.

Westbrook throws shutout, Cards tee off on Reds

Sports

April 10th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jake Westbrook pitched a five-hit shutout and the St. Louis Cardinals backed him with four home runs Wednesday in routing the Cincinnati Reds 10-0. Jon Jay, Carlos Beltran and Matt Adams homered in a span of seven at-bats off Homer Bailey as the Cardinals took two of three from the NL Central champions. Matt Carpenter added a two-run homer on a four-hit day. Adams homered for the second straight game and added an RBI double and walk.

The Cardinals have dominated the Reds at home the last decade, losing just three of 28 series with two splits. Westbrook (1-1) threw his fourth career shutout, walking four and striking out three.
