Actor to invest in Iowa’s ‘Field of Dreams’ site

Sports

February 6th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DYERSVILLE, Iowa (AP) — Actor Matthew Perry is investing in a youth sports complex at an eastern Iowa farm where “Field of Dreams” was filmed. Go the Distance Baseball LLC announced Wednesday that the “Friends” star is part of a group of investors that includes Hall of Fame third baseman Wade Boggs. It’s unclear how much Perry is contributing to the project. A Go the Distance spokeswoman behind the All-Star Ballpark Heaven says the actor approached them after the 1989 movie site’s sale was announced.

Go the Distance plans to transform the state landmark into a 24-field youth baseball and softball tournament complex. The first tournament games are scheduled for 2014. The project’s groundbreaking is tentatively scheduled for May. Perry is expected to attend.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State has landed a highly regarded high school lineman and two players from the national junior college championship team as part of its 25-member 2013 recruiting class. Jake Campos, a 6-foot-7, 260-pound offensive lineman, is considered the top prospect that coach Paul Rhoads has signed in his five recruiting classes at ISU.

Campos played at West Des Moines Valley High School, which is about 40 miles from the Iowa State campus. He originally committed to Missouri, but changed his mind during a visit to ISU on Dec. 1. Defensive end Rodney Coe and running back Aaron Wimberly signed with Iowa State out of Iowa Western Community College, which won the NJCAA championship. Wimberly, who rushed for 1,125 yards and 13 touchdowns last season, also had offers from Iowa, Penn State, Boise State and TCU.

Safety group: Student athletes need bill of rights

Sports

February 6th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

WASHINGTON (AP) – A coalition of more than 100 groups is recommending that student athletes have access to health care professionals, better-trained coaches and up-to-date equipment.  The recommendations released Wednesday are included in a call to action designed to protect the nearly 8 million students who participate in high school sports each year.

The Youth Sports Safety Alliance says health professionals such as athletic trainers or doctors should be available at every school. The group also is telling schools to warn students about performance-enhancing substances. It recommends creation of a national registry to track student athlete deaths. The alliance calls on schools to have clean and well-maintained facilities and require students to have a physical exam – including testing for concussions – before their season starts.

Regents to discuss audit of U. Iowa athletics dept

Sports

February 6th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Board of Regents is expected to discuss the results of an audit that examined employment practices at the University of Iowa athletics department. University President Sally Mason asked for the audit in November after the resignation of associate athletic director Peter Gray, who was accused of sexually harassing athletes and students. Mason called Gray’s case an “avoidable incident,” and apologized to those affected. Gray’s supervisor, Fred Mims, has been reassigned, and Mason promised other action to improve hiring and management and prevent harassment.

The audit will be presented to regents today (Wednesday), during their meeting in West Des Moines. A summary says its recommendations include improving the department’s handling of employee performance reviews. Board President Craig Lang says the audit is a start and regents will request more information.

James helps Northern Iowa top Missouri State 48-37

Sports

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Anthony James scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Jake Koch added 11 points and Northern Iowa held Missouri State to 27 percent shooting en route to a 48-37 victory Tuesday night. The Panthers (13-11, 6-6 Missouri Valley) shot just 40 percent as a team, but that was enough to beat the cold-shooting Bears (7-17, 5-7). UNI’s Marc Sonnen, whose 48.3 percent 3-point shooting percentage ranked third in Division I entering the game, was just 1 of 6 from long range.

Anthony Downing led the Bears with nine points and seven rebounds. The 37 points were Missouri State’s lowest ever in an MVC game. Missouri State led 29-26 after Christian Kirk’s jumper with 11:29 to play, but Northern Iowa came alive after that, outscoring the Bears 22-8 the rest of the way. Sonnen’s 3-pointer with 2:35 left made it 43-33 and effectively sealed the win.

Cardinals RHP Chris Carpenter Likely Out for ’13

Sports

February 5th, 2013 by Jim Field

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Chris Carpenter is unlikely to pitch for the St. Louis Cardinals this season and his career may be over because of a nerve injury that kept him out most of last year.

General manager John Mozeliak said Tuesday that Carpenter has renewed numbness and some bruising in his right shoulder and hand. He will get an additional medical evaluation, but Mozeliak says Carpenter is unlikely to pitch again.

Carpenter had surgery in July for the nerve injury and returned to pitch three games down the stretch and three in the postseason.

Carpenter is 37 and is considered one of the best clutch pitchers in Cardinals history. He is 144-94 for his career and 10-4 with a 3.00 ERA in 18 postseason starts.
