April 7th, 2014 by Jim Field

NASHVILLE – Iowa State senior Hallie Christofferson was recognized as an honorable mention All-American for the second-straight year by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.

Christofferson is the only Cyclone to receive honorable mention honors by the WBCA in back-to-back years. She joins Chelsea Poppens, Kelsey Bolte and Anne O’Neil as the other Cyclones to receive the honor.

Christofferson, a forward from Hamlin, Iowa, had another breakout season for the Cyclones, leading the team in scoring with 18.4 points per game. She also averaged 7.2 rebounds while shooting 46.1 percent from the field. Christofferson is also among the top free throw shooters in the country at 87.7 percent from the charity stripe.

Christofferson scored in double figures in 29 of Iowa State’s 31 games, including 16 games with 20 or more points. She posted eight double-doubles and shot better than 50 percent from the field in 14 games en route to being named to the All-Big 12 First Team.

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State senior forward Hallie Christofferson has been named a Senior Class Award First-Team All-American. Connecticut’s Stefanie Dolson earned the 2013-14 Senior CLASS Award.

Earlier this season, Christofferson was named a finalist for the award, which focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – classroom, community, character and competition.

Christofferson, a Hamlin, Iowa native, earned first-team All-Big 12 honors for the second time in her career after averaging 18.4 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. She was an Academic All-Big 12 First-Team honoree for the third-consecutive year.

This is the second-consecutive year Iowa State has had a player named a first-team All-American by the Senior CLASS Award, making ISU the only team with selections in both 2013 and 2014.

Sports

April 7th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The pitching matchup, Tony Cingrani vs. Michael Wacha, is a repeat from the second game of the season in Cincinnati when neither allowed a run in a combined 13 2-3 innings. The Cardinals face the Reds today (Monday) in their home opener. You can hear the game on KJAN this afternoon, beginning at 1:40.

Just like much of the opening week, the threat of rain hovers over the St. Louis Cardinals home opener against the Reds this afternoon. Weather.com forecasts an 80 percent chance of precipitation. The early season has been a time for cultivating patience for the Cardinals, coming off their second World Series appearance in three years. The first three games were delayed by rain for a total of seven hours and 27 minutes.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas is reuniting with the coach who helped her win gold in 2012. Gymnastics coach Liang Chow told the Des Moines Register on Sunday that the 2012 Olympic all-around gymnastics champion will return to train at his gym in West Des Moines.

Douglas left Chow last August to live with her family in Los Angeles, raising questions about her ability to return to the Olympics in 2016. Chow says he is excited to work with Douglas again, but she faces a number of hurdles before returning to competition.

Douglas won gold in the all-around and team competitions at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Tony Sanchez hit a tiebreaking RBI double in the seventh inning and the Pittsburgh Pirates edged the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1 on Sunday.  Sanchez’s double to deep center field with two outs came off Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright (1-1) and snapped a 1-1 tie.

The hit by the rookie reserve catcher scored Pedro Alvarez, who led off the inning with a walk, and was Sanchez’s second game-winning hit of the week as he singled home the winning run in the 16th inning of Wednesday night’s victory over the Chicago Cubs.

Tony Watson (1-0) retired all four batters he faced, striking out three, and ran his string of consecutive scoreless innings to 24, dating to last season. Jason Grilli pitched a scoreless ninth to convert his first save.

St. Louis managed just three hits.

Cardinals strike early, down Pirates 6-1

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Yadier Molina hit his second homer of the season, Jhonny Peralta added a late two-run shot and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-1 Saturday night. Molina finished 2 for 4 and his solo homer in the sixth gave the Cardinals plenty of cushion as they bounced back from a 12-2 loss on Friday night by jumping on Pittsburgh ace Francisco Liriano (0-1) early.

St. Louis used a three-run first inning to put the Pirates in an early hole then held on as Joe Kelly (1-0) wiggled his way out of trouble. The right-hander worked 5 1-3 innings, walking four and striking out four in his first start of the season.

The Pirates left 11 runners on base, including seven in the first four innings.

Injuries hamper progress for Iowa State

Sports

April 6th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Injuries and other issues have left Iowa State working from behind with the spring game a week away. Iowa State offensive lineman Brock Dagel is out for the spring with a leg injury. Wide receiver Dondre Daley has been limited by a sprained ankle and defensive lineman Pierre Aka is out with a concussion.

Junior college transfer Devron Moore, a potential starter at safety, is homesick and has returned to Texas, according to coach Paul Rhoads. Freshman quarterback Trevor Hodge didn’t participate in Saturday’s scrimmage due to what Rhoads said was an “internal issue,” but Rhoads added that Hodge remains with the team.
