Southern Miss Hires Sadler as Basketball Coach

Sports

May 1st, 2014 by Jim Field

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) — Southern Mississippi has hired former Nebraska coach Doc Sadler as its next basketball coach.

The school announced the hiring late Wednesday and will have a news conference Thursday afternoon.

Sadler coached the Cornhuskers from 2006 to 2012, leading them to three appearances in the NIT. He was an assistant at Iowa State last season under Fred Hoiberg, and the Cyclones finished with a 28-8 record and an appearance in the NCAA tournament’s Sweet 16.

Southern Miss athletic director Bill McGillis said in a statement that the Golden Eagles “hired one of the great coaches in America and a perfect match for Southern Miss.”

Sadler replaces Donnie Tyndall, who left last week to coach Tennessee.

April 30th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Allen Craig homered on a four-hit day that included three RBIs, and Matt Adams hit a three-run homer as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 9-3 Wednesday. Jon Jay had three hits and a walk his first four trips to the plate. The Cardinals avoided a three-game sweep by the team with the best record in the major leagues.

Shelby Miller (3-2) worked around homers to Mark Reynolds and Carlos Gomez, allowing three runs and six hits in six-plus innings. Milwaukee went 20-8 in April, a franchise record for wins in the season’s first full first month.

Matt Garza (1-3) joined the lengthy list of injured Brewers when he was removed in the fourth inning because of a bruised right thumb.

Atlantic Football Coach Nick Ross Resigns

Sports

April 30th, 2014 by Jim Field

Atlantic is in the market for a new head football coach.  Nick Ross has submitted his resignation to the Atlantic School Board.  He will be teaching and coaching in Waukee in the fall.  His wife, Natalie, has also accepted a teaching position in Waukee.  Ross visited with members of the football team Tuesday afternoon.  The Atlantic School Board is expected to act on the resignation at it’s next meeting.  Activities Director Matt Alexander said Ross talked to the school administration and the players now because the district needs to immediately begin the search to fill both the teaching and coaching positions.  Alexander says Ross is still waiting for the Waukee School Board to approve his hiring.  In his two years as the Atlantic head coach the Trojans posted records of 5-4 and 1-8.
