St. Louis Cardinals Baseball news

Sports

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Lance Lynn’s strong finish has earned him the start in Game 2 of the National League division series for the St. Louis Cardinals. Lynn worked six scoreless innings in the Central clincher Friday night against the Cubs. He won his last two starts to end a skid in which he was 0-5 with a 5.44 ERA in eight outings. He also has pitched the last two postseasons.

Matheny chose Lynn ahead of rookies Shelby Miller and Joe Kelly, who have had stronger overall seasons and Michael Wacha. Wacha threw 8 2-3 innings of no-hit ball against Washington in his last start. The manager would not announce starters for Games 3 and 4. Adam Wainwright pitches the opener Thursday against the winner of the wild-card game between Cincinnati and Pittsburgh and could also go in Game 5, if necessary.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — One might think the lone disappointment for Matt Carpenter in his breakout season was falling one hit shy of 200. Except the St. Louis Cardinals leadoff man isn’t that big on statistics, and he didn’t even notice he was in range until the last few days. There have been so many other accomplishments, too.

The 27-year-old Carpenter came to spring training needing to learn a new position so he’d fit in the lineup. He enters the postseason as perhaps the best leadoff man in the game, a second baseman who’ll never hurt you on defense and an MVP candidate. Carpenter was a full-time starter for the first time, then a first-time All-star, and never let up.

He led the majors in hits, runs, doubles and multihit games. He had 55 doubles, breaking Stan Musial’s franchise record of 53 by a left-handed hitter.

Spartans confident ahead of Iowa game

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Mark Dantonio thinks Michigan State has gained confidence during its bye week, looking ahead to its Big Ten opener at Iowa this weekend. The Spartans (3-1) lost at Notre Dame headed into its off week. Dantonio says his team spent the past nine days in search of consistency and big plays on offense. They scored more than one offensive touchdown just once in non-conference play.

Quarterback Connor Cook, relieved by Andrew Maxwell on Michigan State’s last possession at Notre Dame, will be back in control at Iowa. Defensively, there isn’t much more to ask from the nation’s top-ranked unit, other than some takeaways that disappeared against the Fighting Irish.

Chiefs still unbeaten as they begin Week 5

Sports

October 1st, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are off to a 4-0 start. Yes, the same Chiefs that went just 2-14 last season.

The Chiefs pounded the New York Giants 31-7 on Sunday to keep their perfect record intact, though they didn’t come out of it unscathed. Right tackle Eric Fisher is being monitored after a suspected concussion and running back Jamaal Charles has badly blistered feet.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Monday he’ll leave Fisher’s status up to the team’s medical staff, but he believes that Charles will be OK for next Sunday’s game at Tennessee.

Sitting atop NL, Cardinals await opponent

ST. LOUIS (AP) — This time last year, the St. Louis Cardinals had no chance to exhale and things worked out pretty well. Still, they did not want to go through that tension again.

Instead of hustling off somewhere for an elimination game, the NL Central champion Cardinals earned a day off Monday. There’s time to savor a six-game winning streak that gave them a league-leading 97 wins and home-field advantage for the first two rounds of the postseason.

Ace Adam Wainwright starts the division series opener Thursday and the 19-game winner is on track to make two starts if needed. After working out Tuesday, they’ll watch the Pirates and Reds play their aces in the wild card game.

ISU RB Wimberly Earns Big 12 Weekly Honor

Sports

September 30th, 2013 by Jim Field

Wimberly, Aaron2IRVING, Texas- Iowa State running back Aaron Wimberly was named the Big 12’s Co-Offensive Football Player of the Week, announced today by the Big 12 office.

A junior from Snellville, Ga., Wimberly was instrumental in Iowa State’s 38-21 victory over Tulsa Thursday night. Wimberly set career highs in carries (19) and rushing yards (137) in the win, averaging 7.2 yards per carry.

Wimberly’s first-quarter 35-yard dash, the longest rush of the season for the Cyclones, set up ISU’s first score. He also had one catch for 31 yards and returned his only kickoff in the game for 32 yards to give him 200 all-purpose yards.

Wimberly is the first Cyclone running back to rush for over 100 yards in a game since the season-opener vs. Tulsa in 2012 and the first Cyclone to amass 200 all-purpose yards since 2010. He has yet to have a tackle for loss in 29 carries this season.
