Iowa officials say 2013 was year of safe hunting

Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

March 19th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa officials say 2013 was another year of safe hunting in the state. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says no fatalities were recorded last year during hunting seasons. However, there were 11 injuries and six cases of property damage.

Megan Wisecup, safety education programs coordinator, says there’s been a trend of self-inflicted incidents over the last four to five years. Officials recommend that hunters remember basic firearm handling.

Wisecup says mandatory hunter education courses are part of a drastic drop in hunting incidents. In the 1960s, officials recorded more than 100 incidents and up to 20 fatalities a year.

Chiefs GM Dorsey says Sanders fiasco ‘put to bed’

Sports

March 19th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs general manager John Dorsey says the controversial signing of wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders by AFC West-rival Denver has been “put to bed” and that he’s focused on what he can do during the rest of free agency and in the draft.

Sanders had visited the Chiefs last week when reports began to surface he had agreed to a contract. His agent, Steve Weinberg, said that was never the case, and reports citing unnamed sources that claimed he was “shopping” the Chiefs’ offer to other teams were inaccurate. Sanders ultimately signed an $18 million, three-year deal with Denver, and the Chiefs’ lengthy and frustrating pursuit of a wide receiver to help out quarterback Alex Smith rolls on.

Dorsey said Tuesday in his first availability since the start of free agency that “that deal was put to bed, we have to move forward and we have to build for this organization.”

Winningest Iowa girls’ basketball coach resigns

March 18th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

WAUKON, Iowa (AP) — The winningest coach in Iowa girls’ basketball history has resigned. The Des Moines Register reports Gene Klinge submitted his resignation Monday after his coaching contract was not renewed for the Waukon High School girls’ basketball program. The resignation followed a season in which his team went 8-12.

The 77-year-old told the newspaper that officials from the Allamakee Community School District asked him to resign. A message left for superintendent David Herold was not immediately returned Tuesday. In early 2013, Klinge became just the ninth girls’ basketball coach in the country to reach more than 1,000 game wins. He’s the only Iowa coach to have the distinction.

Klinge has coached basketball for more than 50 seasons, with most spent at West Central in Maynard. He spent 11 seasons at Waukon.

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — Grady Sizemore had three hits, scored three runs and showed a good glove in the outfield, helping the Boston Red Sox beat the St. Louis Cardinals 10-5 Monday.

Sizemore, sidelined by injuries for two seasons, was signed in January to a $750,000, one-year contract. An AL All-Star in each of his last three full seasons (2006-08), Sizemore has been hampered by injuries over the last five years and missed the past two seasons following operations on his right knee and back.

With the Red Sox wearing green jerseys on St. Patrick’s Day, starter John Lackey gave up five runs, six hits and two walks in five innings with three strikeouts. Cardinals starter Shelby Miller gave yp three runs, three hits and three walks in 3 2-3 innings.

Iowa’s Fran McCaffery battling family health issue

Sports

March 17th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Most Iowa fans will spend Wednesday morning debating the ins and outs of the team’s first NCAA tournament game in eight years. Hawkeyes coach Fran McCaffery will be in an Iowa City hospital with his son. The highlight of McCaffery’s professional career at Iowa has coincided with a serious family health issue. McCaffery’s 13-year-old son, Patrick, will have surgery to remove a thyroid tumor just hours before Iowa (20-12) and fellow No. 11 seed Tennessee (21-12) tip off in a First Four game in Dayton, Ohio.

McCaffery said Sunday that he planned to fly to Dayton with his team, return to Iowa City for Patrick’s surgery and go back to Ohio in time to coach against the Volunteers.
