  • medalist: Brooke Fletcher – Atlantic – 39
  • runnerup: Morgan Naberhaus – Kuemper – 41

other Atlantic scores:

  • Erin Olsen – 44

other Atlantic scores:

  • Mary Hayes – 65
  • Megan Behrends – 68
  • Hannah McLean – 78

Girls JV: Kuemper 232, Atlantic 265

Coach comments:  It is not the best to have to start our season against Kuemper, but this meet is a good gauge of where we are at and for a first meet, I feel we are sitting in a good spot. Kuemper is a solid team; defending state champs.

Very happy for Brooke Fletcher topping their top 3 golfers for medalist honors with a 3 over par. She finished with 4 pars and a birdie. Erin Olsen is starting the season out strong – some solid pokes of the tees and finishing holes, also with 4 pars. Newcomers Brooke Newell and McKenna DenBeste seemed jittery at first but played more relaxed the second half of their rounds.

Other Girls Results:

  • Treynor 207, Southwest Iowa 272

Boys Varsity:  Atlantic 154, Kuemper 175

  • Medalist:  Evan Schuler 34 (-1)
  • Runner-up:  Sam Renaud 39  (scorecard)
  • Jake Olsen 39
  • Kyle Nelson 42
  • Zac Stork 45
  • Cooper Zablocki 43

Boys JV:  Atlantic 215, Kuemper 183

  • Dawson Walters 55
  • Jackson Wickman 60
  • Matt Tolton 66
  • Dustin Rudolph 69
  • EJ Von Weyhe 80
  • Logan Nelson 80

Coach comments:  Nice start to the golf season. One of our first rounds on the back. Course was in good shape for the weather. Great to see Evan have a great score when he wasn’t hitting greens. One under for the first match. Look forward to seeing that more often. I though Sam Renaud and Jake Olsen had solid rounds. Both felt they could have shot better. Also nice to see Kyle come in as our 4th score. He struggled on a hole or two but played well otherwise. Cooper and Zac also had good scores. Take out two bad holes and played well. Great start to season.

Others Boys Results:

  • Riverside 176, CAM 240 (Medalist: Brad McGinnis, Riverside 41)
  • Treynor 176, Nishnabotna 202

Meyer, Stokes to leave Iowa

Sports

April 9th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Iowa reserves Kyle Meyer and Darius Stokes are leaving the program.    Hawkeyes coach Fran McCaffery says the seldom-used forwards have been released from their scholarships and plan to transfer.

Meyer, a 6-foot-10 post player from Alpharetta, Ga., played one season at Iowa after redshirting in 2012-13. Meyer appeared in just 12 games and averaged 1.3 rebounds. He’ll have three years of eligibility left.

Stokes played in 38 games in four years with the Hawkeyes. He is scheduled to graduate in May and should be eligible immediately for a final season at another school.

Cardinals rally past Reds 7-5

Sports

April 9th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Matt Holliday hit a go-ahead two-run double in the sixth inning that glanced off right fielder Jay Bruce’s glove on the warning track and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-5 on Tuesday night. Yadier Molina homered and Peter Bourjos had three hits and an RBI to help the Cardinals clinch their 26th series win to go with three losses and two splits since 2003 against Cincinnati.

Bruce had a two-run triple in the first, Billy Hamilton’s second hit of the season drove in a run and Ryan Ludwick had two RBIs  for the Reds.  The Reds squandered a 4-0 second-inning lead by the bottom half of the inning, and Lance Lynn got enough support to beat Cincinnati for the second straight time.

Wacha outduels Cingrani as Cardinals win home opener

Sports

April 7th, 2014 by admin

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Michael Wacha outdid Tony Cingrani in a rematch of young power arms and the St. Louis Cardinals got a three-run double from Yadier Molina in the first inning, beating the Cincinnati Reds 5-3 in their home opener on Monday.

Standing room attendance of 47,492, the largest crowd at 9-year-old Busch Stadium, braved day-long rain and temperatures in the 40s to greet the NL champions and visit the new Ballpark Village. Hundreds milled about the attached complex, which features five sports bars and rooftop seating.

The Cardinals bunched three hits and a walk over the first five hitters to take the early lead against Cingrani (0-1), who allowed two hits in seven scoreless innings last week in Cincinnati.

St. Louis ended a three-game losing streak on opening day, including a blowout loss to the Reds last year.

The 22-year-old Wacha (1-0), the NL championship series MVP, pitched six stingy innings.

Iowa State’s Gibson to transfer

Sports

April 7th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State says that junior center Percy Gibson is leaving the program. Cyclones coach Fred Hoiberg says Gibson intends to transfer to another school following the end of the spring semester. Gibson, a 6-foot-9 native of Detroit, played in just 14 games for Iowa State last season despite the team’s occasional struggles inside.

The Cyclones also gave post player Daniel Edozie playing time over Gibson after forward Georges Niang broke his foot in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. Iowa State will add promising junior college transfer Jameel McKay next season, a move that likely would have further cut into Gibson’s playing time.

Gibson’s departure will free up an extra scholarship for the Cyclones to use next season.
