Pot charge for Iowa State’s Dejean-Jones dismissed

News, Sports

December 11th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) – A marijuana charge against Iowa State star Bryce Dejean-Jones has been dismissed by a judge, just hours after he was arrested and charged with multiple misdemeanors. Ames police spokesman Geoff Huff said Dejean-Jones was arrested around 3 a.m. Thursday after police were called to his apartment because of noise complaints. Officers executed a search warrant because they said they smelled and later found marijuana inside the residence.

Dejean-Jones was charged with gathering where marijuana is used, a serious misdemeanor, and two simple misdemeanors; a nuisance party regulation and a noise ordinance violation. Story County Attorney Stephen Holmes told The Associated Press the pot charge was dismissed by a judge in Dejean-Jones’s initial court appearance for a lack of probable cause. The two simple misdemeanors remain pending.

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa State star Bryce Dejean-Jones has been arrested and charged with multiple misdemeanors after police were called to his apartment because of noise complaints. Ames police spokesman Geoff Huff says Dejean-Jones was arrested around 3 a.m. Thursday. He’s charged with gathering where marijuana is used, a serious misdemeanor, and two simple misdemeanors; a nuisance party regulation and a noise ordinance violation.

Huff says the marijuana charge is roughly the equivalent of a drunken-driving charge and that a fine and probation is more likely than jail time. Dejean-Jones is in his first season at Iowa State. He is averaging 17.1 points a game. He remained at the Story County Jail on Thursday morning on $1,600 bond. Detention officer Clark Blue says no attorney information for Dejean-Jones was available.

UPDATE – A judge in Story county ruled today that Ames police did not have probable cause for the arrest and dropped the charges.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles, linebacker Tamba Hali and tight end Anthony Fasano were held out of practice Wednesday with knee injuries. All of them are considered day to day, Chiefs coach Andy Reid said.

Defensive lineman Allen Bailey also missed practice as he continues to recover from a concussion, but wide receiver Junior Hemingway returned to the field after passing his concussion tests. Hemingway had missed the previous two games.

The Chiefs (7-6) have lost three straight, putting their playoff hopes in jeopardy. They play the Oakland Raiders on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium.

Tuttle helps No. 23 Northern Iowa to 65- 55 win over Denver

DENVER (AP) — Seth Tuttle finished with 12 points and Deon Mitchell scored nine of his 11 in a first half where No. 23 Northern Iowa missed just two shots from the floor, helping the Panthers cruise past Denver 65-55 on Wednesday night and move to 9-0 for the third time in school history.

Northern Iowa hit 15 of 17 attempts (88.2 percent) in the opening half to build a lead that stretched to as many as 22 points. That cushion was enough as the Panthers held off a Pioneers squad that usually plays them tough, with all three of the previous meetings decided by six points or less.

The last time Northern Iowa began with nine straight wins was 1963-64 under coach Norm Stewart. The team finished 23-4 that season.

December 10th, 2014 by Jim Field

AMES, Iowa- The Big 12 football coaches selected their All-Big 12 teams this morning, and seven Cyclones were awarded postseason honors for their performance on the field in 2014.

Senior tight end E.J. Bibbs was an All-Big 12 First-Team selection, while senior offensive lineman Jacob Gannon, senior center Tom Farniok, senior defensive end Cory Morrissey and sophomore placekicker Cole Netten earned honorable mention accolades.

Freshman safety Kamari Cotton-Moya was named the Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year and rookie wide receiver Allen Lazard was an honorable mention pick on the all-rookie team.

A native of Chicago, Ill., Bibbs was one of the best tight ends in the nation in 2014, earning a spot as a John Mackey Award semifinalist. Bibbs led all “power 5” tight ends in catches per game (4.5) and caught eight TD passes, one shy from the ISU single-season school record.

Jacob Gannon, a native of Iowa City, Iowa, and Tom Farniok, a native of Sioux Falls, S.D., were both key members of the offensive line in 2014. The duo started at least one game in each of the past four seasons. Farniok ended his career with 47 starts and was on the watch list for the Rimington Award, an award given annually to the nation’s best center. Farniok earned honorable mention All-Big 12 honors the last three seasons.

Morrissey, a native of Ames, Iowa, made the honorable mention team for the second-straight season. Morrissey led all ISU down linemen in tackles (52) and posted team-highs in tackles for loss (8.5) and sacks (6.0). His 6.0 sacks ties for 10th all-time on ISU’s single-season record chart.

Netten, who hails from Ankeny, Iowa, made 11-of-14 field goals in 2014, tying for the third-best field goal percentage (78.6) in school history. His career 75.0 field goal percentage clip (24-32 FG) is currently No. 1 in the ISU record book. Netten was named Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week after making the game-winning field goal in the closing seconds of the Iowa game.

Cotton-Moya, a native of Bakersfield, Calif., started 10 games in his freshman season, leading the team in tackles (77) and ranking third on the team in pass breakups (8). He also registered 2.0 TFL and one forced fumble.

Lazard, a native of Urbandale, Iowa, caught 45 passes for 593 yards in his rookie season. Both totals rank second all-time on ISU’s rookie receiving record chart.

Deer harvest in Iowa’s 1st shotgun season increases over 2013

Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

December 10th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

A wildlife research supervisor with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources says hunters have reported harvesting 19-percent more deer in Iowa during the first shotgun season compared to last year. Willy Suchy credits the relatively mild weather. “Last year was a tough shotgun opener with really cold weather and strong winds,” Suchy said. Today (Wednesday) is the final day of the first shotgun deer season. Suchy anticipates the first season’s harvest will be around 37,000 deer.

“We’re similar to where we were in 2011-2012,” Suchy said. “We’re down substantially from the peak in 2006. Deer numbers are down.” Around 150,000 deer were killed in Iowa in 2006, the first year of so-called “mandatory harvest reporting” in the state. Prior to 2006, the DNR conducted a harvest “estimate” which was calculated based on a postseason postcard survey. Last year, hunters in Iowa killed fewer than 100,000 deer for the first time since the mid-1990s. Suchy isn’t sure yet if the harvest will be below six-digits again this year.

“A lot will depend on this next weekend, the second shotgun season. We still have a lot of licenses to be issued,” Suchy said. “Sometimes, when we have a good opener in the first season, a lot of hunters don’t go the second season so maybe there are (fewer deer killed). But, if we have good weather like we’re looking at, we may have somewhere around 100,000 animals reported.” The deer harvest during the first shotgun season increased over last year, despite 3,000 fewer licenses being sold this year compared to 2013. Suchy notes the license sales decline was primarily due to fewer antlerless licenses being available, which was by design.

Iowa’s second shotgun deer season opens this Saturday (December 13) and runs through Sunday, December 21.
