Martinez, Heyward, Cardinals beat Reds for 4th win in row

Sports

April 18th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Carlos Martinez pitched six strong innings and Jason Heyward hit his first home run for St. Louis, leading the Cardinals over the Cincinnati Reds 5-2 Saturday for their fourth straight win. Matt Carpenter drove in a pair of runs as the NL Central champion Cardinals kept winning after a 3-3 start.

Zack Cozart homered for the Reds, who have lost three in a row and six of seven. Cincinnati speedster Billy Hamilton left in the eighth inning after beating out an infield single. Martinez (1-0) gave up one run on three hits, striking out four and walking two.

Trevor Rosenthal picked up his fourth save in as many opportunities. He struck out Joey Votto with two on to end the game. Homer Bailey (0-1) surrendered five runs and nine hits over 5 2-3 innings. He made his first start after beginning the season on the disabled list while recovering from surgery on a torn flexor tendon.

Cardinals left fielder Matt Holliday left Saturday’s game against Cincinnati in the bottom of the first inning because of tightness in his back. Holliday doubled and scored before leaving. He has hit safely in all 10 games for St. Louis this season, and his double was his first extra-base hit. He is batting .363. Jon Jay moved from center to left field and Peter Bourjos entered the game.

April 18th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Michael Wacha pitched seven strong innings and Yadier Molina delivered a bases-clearing double to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 6-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night. With the score 1-1, Matt Holliday led off the bottom of the seventh with a single to right field. He went to third on a one-out double by Jhonny Peralta. After Jon Jay was intentionally walked, Molina lined the first pitch from Johnny Cueto down the left-field line that scored three.

Joey Votto gave Cincinnati a first-inning lead with his fourth homer, his third against St. Louis. Matt Carpenter tied the game in the bottom of the inning after doubling, going to third on a groundout and scoring when he somersaulted over catcher Brayan Pena on Holliday’s fly to center.

The Cards and Red are in action again today (Saturday) in St. Louis. Pre-game coverage on KJAN is at 12:20-p.m., with the 1st pitch at around 1:15.

April 18th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State says coach Fred Hoiberg has undergone open-heart surgery to replace aortic valve. Hoiberg had surgery Friday at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Doctor Rakesh Suri says the operation was a success, adding that “Hoiberg is in recovery and doing very well himself.”

Hoiberg retired from the NBA following the 2004-05 season because of heart issues. He just completed his fifth season at Iowa State, leading the Cyclones to four straight NCAA Tournament appearances and back-to-back Big 12 tournament titles.

Hoiberg is expected to need about 4-6 weeks to recover.

Royals Recall Fuentes from Omaha, Option Gore to NW Arkansas

Sports

April 17th, 2015 by Jim Field

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals have recalled outfielder Reymond Fuentes from Triple-A Omaha and optioned outfielder Terrance Gore to Double-A Northwest Arkansas.

Kansas City announced the moves before opening a three-game series against the Oakland Athletics on Friday night.

The 24-year-old Fuentes was acquired from San Diego last November for minor league pitcher Kyle Bartsch. He was 8 for 18 with a double in his first six games in Omaha.

The Royals were seeking a little more offensive production after losing outfielder Alex Rios to a broken finger. Gore was called up to replace him, but he is known primarily for his speed and not his production. He didn’t appear in a game while with the Royals.
