Carpenter, Moss, Reynolds homer as Cardinals beat Giants 7-5

Sports

August 30th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Matt Carpenter, Brandon Moss and Mark Reynolds all hit home runs, Yadier Molina drove in two and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the San Francisco Giants 7-5 on Sunday. Jason Heyward added three hits and drove in a run for the Cardinals, who won for the seventh time in eight games. Greg Garcia also drove in a run.

Jaime Garcia (7-4) allowed season highs in hits (10) and runs (four) but was effective enough to improve to 4-0 over his past six starts. He did not walk a batter and struck out one, a season low. Marlon Byrd celebrated his 38th birthday with a pair of doubles, a triple and four RBIs. Kelby Tomlinson also drove in a run for the Giants, who ended a 3-3 homestand. Chris Heston (11-8) gave up five runs in 3 2-3 innings.

Chiefs settle on long snapper, waive 11 players

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Chiefs have selected James Winchester to serve as their long snapper, waiving Andrew East and 10 others Sunday as they pare down to the 75-man roster limit by Tuesday afternoon. The Chiefs still need to cut four more players. Winchester and East, who recently became engaged to Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson, made up one of the few position battles in training camp this year. East played his college ball at Vanderbilt.

Other players waived by the Chiefs were tight end Adam Schiltz; wide receivers Kenny Cook, Jeret Smith and L’Damian Washington; offensive linemen Charles Tuaau, Marcus Reed and Anthony Dima; defensive lineman Vaughn Martin; and defensive backs Kenneth Penny and Aaron Hester.

Kansas City visits St. Louis for its final preseason game Thursday night.

Lynn beats Giants for 1st time, hurts ankle, Cardinals win

Sports

August 30th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Lance Lynn pitched neatly into the eighth inning before leaving with ankle injury that’s not considered serious, beating San Francisco for the first time in his career as the St. Louis Cardinals blanked the Giants 6-0 Saturday.

Lynn (11-8) awkwardly came off the mound to field Juan Perez’s leadoff chopper in the eighth and twisted his right ankle trying to throw to first. That was Lynn’s final batter, and he exited with a mild ankle sprain that will be reevaluated Sunday. Lynn gave up six hits, struck out two and walked two. He had been 0-4 with a 6.33 ERA in his previous four regular-season starts against San Francisco and 0-1 in three postseason outings.

The right-hander outpitched Ryan Vogelsong (9-10) after losing to him 2-0 on Aug. 18 at Busch Stadium. The NL Central-leading Cardinals broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the fifth. Matt Carpenter hit an RBI single for the lead and Yadier Molina capped it with a two-run single.

Smith sharp as Chiefs rout Titans 34-10 in preseason game

Sports

August 29th, 2015 by admin

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Alex Smith threw for 171 yards and two touchdowns in less than a half, and the Kansas City Chiefs’ offense looked the sharpest it has all preseason in a weather-shortened 34-10 victory over the Tennessee Titans on Friday night.

The game was called with 3 minutes, 50 seconds remaining after thunder rumbled and lightning streaked across the sky. Heavy rains had turned one end zone into a lake.

Smith was 16 of 18 before giving way to third-string quarterback Aaron Murray just before halftime. Murray played the rest of the game for the Chiefs (3-0), throwing for 146 yards with two touchdown passes and an interception as backup Chase Daniel got the night off.

Marcus Mariota got off to a slow start for Tennessee (1-2), misfiring on his first three throws. But the first-round pick out of Oregon was 7 of 8 for 99 yards the rest of the half.

Tomlinson lines game-winning single as Giants beat Cardinals

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Rookie Kelby Tomlinson lined a bases-loaded single up the middle with one out in the ninth against previously unbeaten Kevin Siegrist, and the San Francisco Giants topped the Cardinals 5-4 on Friday night to snap St. Louis’ five-game winning streak.

Left fielder Brandon Moss grabbed another glove from the dugout and moved in to make a five-man infield, then Tomlinson found a hole against Siegrist (5-1).

Marlon Byrd hit a grand slam off 15-game winner Michael Wacha in the third inning for the Giants, who kept pace 2 1-2 games behind NL West-leading Los Angeles.

Javier Lopez (1-0) got Moss to line out to second in the ninth and Tomlinson quickly fired to first to double up Stephen Piscotty, who was off the bag.

Byrd’s eighth career grand slam gave the Giants eight for the season, a franchise record. Byrd last hit one on July 9, 2013, while with the Mets facing the Giants at AT&T Park.
