Chiefs agree to 5-year deal with Fisher

Sports

July 26th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have signed No. 1 overall pick Eric Fisher, ensuring that the big right tackle out of Central Michigan will be in training camp with plenty of time to prepare for the season. The team announced the move Friday without disclosing terms. A person familiar with the situation, speaking on condition of anonymity because terms were confidential, told The Associated Press that the contract will be for five years.

The deal is expected to be in the $22 million range, which would put it on par with the two previous No. 1 picks to have been signed since the NFL instituted a new rookie wage scale with the most recent collective-bargaining agreement.

The team has now signed all eight draft selections from the 2013 draft class.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) – A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press the Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to terms on a five-year deal with No. 1 overall pick Eric Fisher.  The person spoke Friday on condition of anonymity because the team has not announced the signing.

Fisher was expected to report to training camp Friday in St. Joseph, Mo., in time for the first full-squad workout. The right tackle missed three days of practice earlier this week that involved his fellow rookies, quarterbacks and selected veterans.

Fisher and fellow offensive tackle Luke Joeckel were considered the top linemen available in the draft. The Chiefs opted to go with Fisher with the first pick, and he will play on the right side opposite veteran left tackle Branden Albert.

Group of Chiefs fans hopes to break noise record

Sports

July 26th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – A group of Kansas City Chiefs fans is organizing an effort to break the world record for the loudest roar at a sports stadium sometime in the upcoming NFL season.  The group calls itself “Terrorhead Returns” and says Guinness Book of World Records officials have given final approval for the record attempt, though no date has been set.

Organizers say the effort is an attempt to unify the local fan base and revive Arrowhead Stadium’s reputation as one of the loudest venues in the NFL. The effort follows a dismal season in which the Chiefs finished 2-14, dealt with the suicide of linebacker Jovan Belcher outside the stadium and saw the firings of head coach Romeo Crennel and general manager Scott Pioli.

Chiefs report to camp with high expectations

Sports

July 26th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Eric Berry didn’t even allow a question about last season to be asked before cutting off the inquiring mind. There’s no way he was going to relive that nightmare. Instead, the Pro Bowl safety spoke optimistically about what the Kansas City Chiefs can accomplish this season under a new head coach. Berry thinks the pieces are in place for a quick turnaround from a 2-14 record a year ago to a team with playoff aspirations.

Berry was among the veteran players who checked into training camp Thursday on the campus of Missouri Western State University. They joined rookies, quarterbacks and selected veterans who were able to get a head start over the past few days. The Chiefs’ first full-squad workout is today (Friday).

The Phillies also dropped five straight from June 7-12.

St. Louis has the most wins in the majors at 62 and is a season-high 25 games over .500. Lynn (12-5) had dropped four of his previous five decisions and was 3-4 with a 6.32 ERA in his past eight starts.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals recalled Marc Rzepczynski from Triple-A Memphis on Thursday, giving them three left-handed relievers. Rookie right-hander Carlos Martinez was optioned to Memphis.

The 27-year-old Rzepczynski was demoted to the minors April 29 and was 1-2 with a 3.07 ERA at Memphis while limiting left-handed hitters to a .185 batting average. Rzepczynski appeared in 70 games with St. Louis last season.

The 21-year-old Martinez was the organization’s minor league pitcher of the month in June and is among their top prospects for a future rotation spot. He has a 5.56 ERA in 10 games covering 11 1-3 innings with St. Louis.
