Wacha wins 14th, Cardinals beat Pirates 4-2

Sports

August 13th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Yadier Molina tripled in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning when right fielder Gregory Polanco missed an attempted shoe-top catch and Michael Wacha got his 14th win to tie for the major league high as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2 on Wednesday night.

The game didn’t live up to the anticipated marquee pitching matchup between Wacha (14-4) and Gerrit Cole (14-6), both of whom were gone by the seventh inning. Seattle’s Felix Hernandez also has 14 wins.

St. Louis gift-wrapped a run, too, when center fielder Randal Grichuk badly misplayed an attempted diving catch on Andrew McCutchen’s RBI triple that tied it at 2 in the fifth. Grichuk landed early and bounced as the ball rolled past him to the wall. Kevin Siegrist worked two perfect innings and Trevor Rosenthal finished for his 35th save in 37 chances.

Chiefs’ Charles laments ‘rough’ offensive line last season

Sports

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles sounded off on the ineptness of his offensive line last season following Wednesday’s practice at Missouri Western State University. Rarely one to speak out, the Pro Bowler acknowledged the hodge-podge of players the Chiefs had block for him was a big reason why he was less productive last season. It was also a big reason why he was banged up almost the entire way.

Kansas City lost starting guard Jeff Allen to a season-ending injury in Week 1, then had to make do with fill-ins Mike McGlynn and Jeff Linkenbach the rest of the way. Not only is Allen back in the mix, but the Chiefs traded for Pro Bowl offensive guard Ben Grubbs in the offseason – much to the delight of Charles.

IGHSAU needs new officials

Sports

August 12th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union is weighing options in the hopes of attracting new officials for the various sports. Lisa Brinkmeyer of the girls’ union says over the last five or six years they have lost more than 400 officials.

Brinkmeyer says “It used to be that colleges offered an officiating class and credits. Well, those kind of fell by the wayside, although our officials coordinator Joe Oswald is working with some of the colleges trying to get that started up again. And also mentoring. We’ve got so many great officials out there. We talk to them a lot about ‘find some young guy or young gal in your community, to get them interested in it.'”

Brinkmeyer says there have also been discussions about the possibility of offering credits to high school students who officiate junior high contests. She says a national study showed that one in ten new officials don’t return for a second year.

Chiefs’ Jeremy Maclin misses practice with strained neck

Sports

August 10th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs wide receiver Jeremy Maclin was held out of practice Monday after straining his neck the previous day, putting his availability for their preseason opener in question. Kansas City visits Arizona on Saturday. Chiefs coach Andy Reid said he was unsure when Maclin was hurt during Sunday’s practice, or whether the injury occurred during a brief scuffle with cornerback Marcus Cooper.

Maclin had an X-ray Monday morning and spent practice working out with the trainers. The Chiefs did get some positive injury news with the return of wide receiver Chris Conley to practice. The rookie has been out since the start of training camp with a knee injury.
