Injuries hamper progress for Iowa State

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Injuries and other issues have left Iowa State working from behind with the spring game a week away. Iowa State offensive lineman Brock Dagel is out for the spring with a leg injury. Wide receiver Dondre Daley has been limited by a sprained ankle and defensive lineman Pierre Aka is out with a concussion.

Junior college transfer Devron Moore, a potential starter at safety, is homesick and has returned to Texas, according to coach Paul Rhoads. Freshman quarterback Trevor Hodge didn’t participate in Saturday’s scrimmage due to what Rhoads said was an “internal issue,” but Rhoads added that Hodge remains with the team.

Miller falters as Cardinals fall to Pirates 12-2

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Shelby Miller still hasn’t discovered a way to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates. And while the St. Louis Cardinals right-hander will certainly get plenty of shots over the next few years, he appears no closer to figuring it out now than he was a season ago after the Pirates jumped on him late in a 12-2 loss on Friday night.

The 23-year-old Miller tied a career high by allowing five earned runs in 5 1-3 innings while falling to 0-5 with a 5.92 ERA against the Pirates. He is 16-5 with a 2.34 ERA in his 33 other major league appearances.

Pedro Alvarez homered twice and scored three runs as Pittsburgh cruised in the first meeting between the two clubs since the Cardinals won Game 5 of the NL division series last October on their way to winning the National League pennant.

The start of the game was delayed 1:05 by rain, the third straight time a Cardinals’ game was delayed by weather. The series continues today (Saturday). RHP Joe Kelly will make his season debut for the Cardinals against Pittsburgh’s Francisco Liriano (0-0, 0.00).

Cardinals win after another long rain delay

CINCINNATI (AP) – The St. Louis Cardinals overcame another long delay and Todd Frazier’s two homers on Thursday, holding on to beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-6 and take two of three in their season-opening series.

The first pitch was delayed 3 hours, 42 minutes because of rain. The Cardinals then emerged from their two-game hitting slump by knocking Homer Bailey (0-1) out of the game in the fifth inning. Jhonny Peralta homered to get it going.

St. Louis pulled away with three runs in the seventh, when Matt Holliday’s single off the outfield wall was upheld by the first video review of the series.

Lance Lynn (1-0) gave up Jay Bruce’s two-run homer and Frazier’s solo shot during five innings.

Reds break record slump, beat Cardinals 1-0 in 9th

Sports

April 3rd, 2014 by Ric Hanson

CINCINNATI (AP) – Chris Heisey’s single in the bottom of the ninth inning ended Cincinnati’s record scoreless streak to open a season and sent the Reds to a 1-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday night following a long rain delay. The Reds set a modern franchise record by failing to score in the first 17 innings of the season. Their previous worst was 13 scoreless innings in 1909 and 1934.

Ryan Ludwick and Todd Frazier opened the ninth with singles off Carlos Martinez. After a sacrifice, Brayan Pena was walked to load the bases and the pinch-hitting Heisey singled up the middle. The Reds were the last team in the majors to score a run this season. Heisey’s hit broke an 0 for 11 slump with runners in scoring position.
