Marion knocks off Harlan in Girls 4A Quarterfinals

Sports

March 2nd, 2016 by admin

The upsets keep coming in Class 4A.

The latest victim was No. 3 Harlan, winner of the last two state championships. A young Marion team with no state tournament experience hit a slew of early 3-pointers, then countered Harlan’s comeback attempt to post a 46-38 quarterfinal victory.

With the win by the seventh-ranked Indians, the top four teams in the rankings were out of the tournament before the semifinal round. No. 1 Western Dubuque, No. 2 Lewis Central and No. 4 Ballard also were eliminated.

Marion starts three sophomores and two freshmen, but they played relaxed and easy from the start. The Indians’ first six field goals were 3-pointers as they bolted to a 20-4 lead, forcing Harlan into a near impossible game of catchup.

The Cyclones went without a field goal in the first quarter, trailed 20-6 at halftime and were down 32-16 late in the third quarter. But they finally started hitting some shots and fashioned a 13-1 run that Taylor Frederick capped with a banked 3-pointer, cutting the lead to 33-29 midway through the fourth quarter.

Harlan twice more got the lead down to four, the last time at 38-34 on Emma Ahrenholtz’s corner 3 with 2:18 remaining. The Indians stemmed the comeback there by making six free throws down the stretch, getting a key offensive rebound from Mia Laube along the way.

Laube rebounded Chloe Rice’s missed free throw and that resulted in two more free throws for Rice, who made both for a 45-36 lead with 39.2 seconds left.

Freshman Sophie Willette led Marion with 12 points and Rice, a sophomore, scored 10. Freshman Maddie Knapp added nine points in three 3-pointers.

Jordyn Moser and Taylor Frederick, veterans of Harlan’s title teams, led the Cyclones with 13 points each. The 5-foot-7 Moser also grabbed 14 rebounds. Frederick was bottled up early by a collapsing defense but broke free for 10 fourth-quarter points.

Pella holds off #2 Lewis Central

Eighth ranked Pella survived a lengthy drought in the fourth quarter to hold off second ranked Lerwis Central 47-41 in a class 4A quarterfinal round game. Leading 41-30 early in the fourth quarter the Lady Dutch went into a delay game and managed only one field goal the remainder of the game.

The Lady Dutch only managed eight points in the fourth quarter but held on for the victory. It was a struggle all game on offense for the Titans who made only five of 20 shots in the opening half and trailed 26-15 at the break. The Titans pulled to within 41-37 in the fourth quarter but misfired on four opportunities to get even closer.

Maegen Holt led Lewis Central with 21 points.

Chiefs place franchise tag on All-Pro safety Eric Berry

Sports

March 2nd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs placed the franchise tag on Eric Berry on Tuesday, ensuring the All-Pro safety who overcame from cancer last year will remain Chiefs property through next season. The 27-year-old Berry will make $10,806,000 under the franchise tag. It’s the fourth time in five years that Kansas City has designated a franchise player.

Berry was diagnosed with lymphoma in late 2014 and immediately began treatment. He was deemed cancer-free last summer, reported to training camp on time, and proceeded to have arguably the best season of his six-year career. He made 55 tackles and two interceptions while playing in every game. His performance earned Berry the AP’s Comeback Player of the Year award.

The Chiefs have until mid-July to work out a long-term contract with Berry. Otherwise, he would play for the tag salary. He can’t talk to other clubs.

Sports

March 1st, 2016 by admin

Newell-Fonda is another step closer to a fourth straight appearance in the Class 1A championship game.

The defending champs relied on their defensive pressure throughout the game and pulled away in the fourth quarter to knock off unbeaten Exira/Elk Horn-Kimballton 53-42 to complete the 1A quarterfinal round.

That puts the seventExiraEHKstate1h-ranked Mustangs into a semifinal game at 11:45 a.m. Thursday against No. 3 Springville, the team Newell-Fonda beat in last year’s title game on a last-second shot.

Erin Gerke led Newell-Fonda with 15 points, while freshman Olivia Larsen came off the bench to get 10 points and six rebounds. Maddi Morenz added eight points for the Mustangs and Mallory Sievers contributed with six rebounds, six steals and four points.

Newell-Fonda came up with 23 steals and 22 offensive rebounds, leading to a 37-7 edge in points off turnovers and a 14-6 margin in second-chance points.

Kealey Nelson led second-ranked Exira/EHK with 17 points on 6-for-7 shooting. Mara Burmeister added nine points for the Spartans, while Maggie Rasmussen and Sophia Peppers each scored eight. Exira/EHK shot a respectable 45.5 percent but got 37 fewer shots than the Mustangs.ExiraEHKstate2

Newell-Fonda trailed 34-33 heading into the fourth quarter of the back-and-forth game but soon took control. The Mustangs began the quarter with a 9-0 run, the last two baskets coming after steals, to open a 42-34 lead and were ahead the rest of the way.

Exira/EHK cut the lead to 42-38 on Nelson’s follow shot, but the Mustangs responded with a 7-1 to secure the victory.

Newell-Fonda moves on with a 19-6 record. Exira/Elk Horn-Kimballton, a semifinalist last year, finishes 23-1.ExiraEHKstate3
