Reyes, Cardinals blank Giants, tighten NL wild-card race

Sports

September 19th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Alex Reyes pitched seven dominant innings in his third major league start, fellow rookie Aledmys Diaz hit a two-run homer and the St. Louis Cardinals moved up in the tight NL wild-card race, blanking the San Francisco Giants 3-0 on Sunday. The Giants dropped one game behind the New York Mets for the top wild-card spot. The Cardinals closed within one game of San Francisco.

St. Louis split this four-game series, winning the final two. The Giants finished up a 2-5 homestand, and have won just one series at AT&T Park since the All-Star break.

Reyes (3-1), considered one of the majors’ best pitching prospects, hasn’t disappointed since he was called up from the minors on Aug. 9 when Michael Wacha went on the disabled list with shoulder discomfort. Reyes gave up four hits, striking out six with two walks. Seung Hwan Oh pitched a scoreless ninth for his 18th save.

Diaz hit his 16th homer, a two-run drive in the third off Albert Suarez (3-4).

Novak makes 4 field goals, helps Texans beat Chiefs 19-12

Sports

HOUSTON (AP) — DeAndre Hopkins had 113 yards receiving and a touchdown and Nick Novak kicked four field goals, helping the Houston Texans to a 19-12 win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. Novak connected from 32, 24, 31 and 43 yards for the Texans.

The Texans (2-0) showed that they are a much different team than the one that was embarrassed in a 30-0 wild-card playoff loss to the Chiefs (1-1) in January, when quarterback Brian Hoyer had five turnovers. New quarterback Brock Osweiler did throw two interceptions but the Chiefs had more trouble taking care of the ball, with Houston’s defense setting a franchise record by recovering three fumbles in the first half.

E Washington stuns N Iowa 34-30 with last minute TD

CHENEY, Wash. (AP) — Reilly Hennessey hit fourth-string tight end Beau Byus with a 23-yard scoring pass off a fake field goal with 43 seconds left to lift Eastern Washington to a 34-30 win Northern Iowa on Saturday night. Hennessey, the backup quarterback, had rallied the Eagles (2-1) to a 28-24 lead with two touchdown passes after they had trailed 24-7 at the half. Freshman Antoine Custer Jr. started the comeback by returning the second-half kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown.

Northern Iowa (1-2), which had 257 yards in the first half, had eight on its first five possessions of the second half before drives of 60 and 39 yards led to fourth-quarter field goals and a 30-28 lead with 4:13 to play. Hennessey, in relief of Gage Gubrud, completed 21 of 29 passes for 226 yards, with seven completions coming on the final drive that started on the 25. His third TD pass was the first reception of Byus’ career. Kendrick Bourne had 10 catches for 152 yards. The Eagles finished with 403 yards, 231 in the second half.

Eastern’s All-American receiver Cooper Kupp, who sprained a shoulder in last weekend’s overtime loss at North Dakota State, did not play.

Cardinals score 2 in 9th, top Giants in playoff chase

Sports

September 18th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Kolten Wong hit a sacrifice fly that capped a two-run comeback in the ninth inning and the St. Louis Cardinals rallied for a big win in their playoff chase, beating the San Francisco Giants 3-2 Saturday night. The Cardinals had lost three straight and held a team meeting prior to the game. Their win further tightened the NL wild-card race — the Giants and Mets are tied for the top two spots, with the Cardinals trailing by two games.

Jedd Gyorko singled with one out in the ninth off Sergio Romo. Santiago Casilla (2-5) walked Yadier Molina before Randal Grichuk hit a tying single. Jose Martinez, pinch-running for Molina, took third on the hit and easily scored on Wong’s fly. Seung Hwan Oh (5-3) retired six batters for the win.

Kraemer tosses 3 TD passes, Drake tops D-II McKendree 28-16

Sports

September 17th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Grant Kraemer went 24 of 42 for 241 yards with three touchdown passes and Drake pulled away from Division II member McKendree 28-16 on Saturday. McKendree built a 10-0 lead after one quarter on a 39-yard touchdown run by Brandon Wildman and a 29-yard field goal by Steven O’Block.

But the Bulldogs (1-2) ran off 28 straight points, including touchdown receptions by Andrew Yarwood, Grant Menard and Eric Saubert, the last of which made it 28-10 at the end of the third quarter.

Kraemer completed passes to 11 different Drake receivers. Drew Lauer led the Bulldogs in rushing with 76 yards on 12 carries. Conley Wilkens added 69 yards on the ground and a 16-yard touchdown carry in the second quarter.

Chiefs waive DL Nunez-Roches, elevate OL Devey to roster

Sports

September 17th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have waived defensive lineman Rakeem Nunez-Roches and elevated offensive lineman Jordan Devey from the practice squad for Sunday’s game in Houston.

Kansas City needed depth along the offensive line after declaring their starting guards, Laurent Duvernay-Tardiff and Parker Ehinger, out for the Texans. Duvernay-Tardif is dealing with an ankle sprain and Ehinger is out with a concussion.

Devey gives the Chiefs seven healthy offensive linemen, which is coach Andy Reid’s preference. The Chiefs are also expected to be without running back Jamaal Charles, who is doubtful as he tries to work his way back from surgery last season to repair the torn ACL in his right knee. Charles has not played in a game since Week 5 last season.

North Dakota St tops No. 13 Iowa on final play

Sports

September 17th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Cam Pedersen kicked a 37-yard field as time expired and North Dakota State pulled off a 23-21 upset of No. 13 Iowa on Saturday for its sixth straight win over an FBS opponent. The Bison went for a 2-point conversion down 21-20 with 3:41 left, but couldn’t punch it in. North Dakota State’s defense then held, and quarterback Easton Stick’s 29-yard run put the Bison in position for the biggest win in school history.

The loss was just the fourth by a ranked FBS team to an FCS school. North Dakota State isn’t just another Football Championship Subdivision team, though. The Bison have won the last five FCS national titles. Against the Hawkeyes, they ran for 239 yards and held Iowa to 231 total yards.

“Am I shocked that we lost? Yeah, to an extent. But these guys came ready to play,” Iowa defensive tackle Jaleel Johnson said. Stick had 124 yards passing and a touchdown for the Bison (3-0), who also snapped Iowa’s nine-game home winning streak.

C.J. Beathard had three TD passes for Iowa (2-1). But the Hawkeyes ran for just 34 yards on 25 carries. “I thought we’d be able to run the ball a little bit better just because that’s what we do,” Beathard said. The Hawkeyes can forget about the playoffs. Barring something extraordinary, it’s tough to imagine the committee letting in a team that lost to an FCS school — even one as talented as North Dakota State.

The Hawkeyes open their first nine-game Big Ten season with a trip to Rutgers next weekend, their first road game and their first-ever against the Scarlet Knights. It should be, along with an October 15 meeting at Purdue, the easiest game the Hawkeyes will play outside of Iowa City.
