Big 12 will take top 2 teams for football title game, no divisions

Sports

October 28th, 2016 by admin

IRVING, Texas (AP) — The Big 12 Conference isn’t splitting up into divisions for football.

Big 12 officials announced Friday that the two highest-placed teams in the conference standings will play in the league’s championship game when that resumes next season.

Commissioner Bob Bowlsby said with the 10-team league’s round-robin schedule that he expects the Big 12 champion to be uniquely positioned for College Football Playoff consideration. He said the guaranteed matchup of the top two teams for the conference title will make the Big 12 champion a strong contender for a playoff spot.

Athletic directors decided on the 1 vs. 2 format after input from the league’s football coaches.

The league is expected to announce the site of the 2017 championship game in the coming weeks.

Old vs. New: Bill Snyder, K-State visit Iowa State

Sports

October 28th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — The Big 12’s oldest coach is about to meet the youngest. Kansas State’s Bill Snyder, 78, became just the seventh coach in FBS history to coach at least 300 games at one school earlier this season — and a win Saturday at Iowa State (1-6, 0-4) would give him 198 career victories, good for 25th all time. Iowa State’s Matt Campbell, at 36 the youngest Power Five coach in the country, just finished his seventh game with the Cyclones.

Campbell has only come out on top once, and the matchup against the Wildcats (4-3, 2-2) is one of the few games left that Iowa State has a reasonable chance of winning. “I don’t care what profession you’re in, especially in the world of college football. It’s hard to sustain success, and he’s had this unique ability to do it,” Campbell said of Snyder. “It’s a great matchup for our team (in terms of), where are we in our own culture? Because, to me, it says a lot each other’s culture right now.”

Despite its dismal record, Iowa State has led at halftime in three of its four Big 12 games and is coming off a bye. But lately Kansas State has owned this series, which will be played for the 100th year in a row this weekend. The Wildcats have taken the last eight meetings. But the last two victories in Ames were by just 10 total points — and last year the Cyclones gave up 10 points in the final 40 seconds, losing 38-35 and costing coach Paul Rhoads his job.

“In some cases, we have been fortunate. In all cases, we have been fortunate to have a lot of good young guys who do not give in,” Snyder said.

Exira-EHK ready for playoff challenge at Bedford

Sports

October 27th, 2016 by admin

The Exira-EHK Spartans and the Bedford Bulldogs will meet for the second time this season on Friday night in the 8-man High School Football Playoffs.  This meeting figures to be very different from the first contest that was played in Week 2 on September 9th with Bedford prevailing 40-6.  Exira-EHK was without multiple key players in that contest and Bedford Bulldog Co-Head Coach Matt Ambrose knows the Spartans will be a different team this time around.

Bedford has gotten great offensive production throughout the season from a Senior and a Freshman in the backfield. Senior Running Back Sam McMillin has carried the ball 177 times for 1,469 yards and 22 touchdowns this season for the Bulldogs.  Freshman Quarterback Brennen Sefrit was thrown into the mix early in the season due to Joel King going down with a broken collarbone and he has taken full advantage of the opportunity, rushing for 406 yards and 7 scores and throwing for 347 yards and 3 more scores.  Exira-EHK Head Coach Tom Petersen thinks his team has improved defensively throughout the season and will be ready to slow down both players this time.

Exira-EHK is lead by an experienced backfield. Running Back Drew Buckholdt has been a longtime stalwart for the Spartans and has done it again this season rushing for 677 yards and 13 touchdowns and he also leads the team in tackles.  Senior Quarterback Connor Westergaard stepped into that position after Week 4 and has been a big part of the ground game with 529 yards and 12 touchdowns.  Buckholdt and Westergaard rack up a lot of the stats but Coach Petersen said Senior Fullback Cole Madsen is a big part of that.

Bedford expects a physical contest and Coach Ambrose knows they need to get things done up front to try to slow the Spartans down. He said it is going to take a strong effort physically and mentally to come out on top.

We’ll have coverage of the Spartans and Bulldogs on Friday night on KJAN! Join Chris Parks and Mike Smith on the call on AM1220, FM101.1, online at kjan.com, and on the KJAN mobile app. Our coverage will begin with our final edition of our pick ’em show Who’s Gonna Win? at 5:30pm, followed by Pre-Game at 6:00pm, and Kickoff at 7:00pm in Bedford.

Hawkeyes work to fix struggling offense

Sports

October 27th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa Hawkeyes are using their off week to try and fix an anemic offense. Seven starters returned from a unit that helped lead Iowa to the Rose Bowl but after eight games they are ranked 113th out of 128 FBS teams in total offense. They are 5-3 after a 17-9 loss to Wisconsin. (Click on the left side of each audio bar to hear the comment)

A season ending injury to leading receiver Matt Vandeberg following the Big Ten opener has left the Hawkeyes with an inexperienced group of receivers who are having trouble getting open down field.

That’s offensive coordinator Greg Davis who feels senior quarterback C.J. Beathard is playing just as well this season as he did a year ago.

Davis says the Hawkeyes have been in too many third and long situations.

Iowa returns to action November fifth with a visit to Penn State.
