Foles lifts Chiefs past Colts 30-14

Sports

October 30th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Nick Foles threw two touchdown passes in relief of the injured Alex Smith to help the Kansas City Chiefs hold off Indianapolis 30-14 on Sunday. It was a rough game for the Chiefs, who lost Smith twice after hits to the head and finished the game with Charcandrick West as their only healthy running back.

Smith was checked for a concussion in the first half and cleared to return, which he did in the second quarter. He left again early in the third quarter after Clayton Geathers shoved Smith’s head to the turf as the quarterback tried to slide underneath the tackle. Smith was then diagnosed with a concussion and did not return.

The social media traffic about the hits on Smith came from all corners. Some fans questioned whether Geathers intentionally drove Smith’s head into the turf to knock him out of the game. Former Colts linebacker Gary Brackett wrote on Twitter that whoever cleared Smith to return should be fired, while the television announcers questioned the play call because of Smith’s previous injury. Even Smith’s wife, Elizabeth, piped in – questioning how many hits it takes to draw a flag. Smith took several hits to the head in last week’s game that weren’t called.

In addition to Smith, starting running back Spencer Ware missed the second half with a concussion. Ware started in place of Jamaal Charles , who was inactive because of swelling in his surgically repaired knee. Left guard Parker Ehinger also left in the second half with a right knee injury and did not return.

CHICAGO (AP) — Corey Kluber and Jason Kipnis led the Cleveland Indians to a 7-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs and a three-games-to-one lead in the World Series. Kluber gave up five hits over six innings and blanked the Cubs following Anthony Rizzo’s RBI single in the bottom of the first. Kipnis put the game out of reach with a three-run homer in the seventh, one inning after his sacrifice fly put Cleveland ahead 4-1.

MIAMI (AP) — Toxicology reports show Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez had cocaine and alcohol in his system when he and two friends died in a boat crash into a Miami Beach jetty late last month. Toxicology reports show both men also had alcohol in their systems, while Rivero also had cocaine detectable in his system. The cause of death was listed as “boat crash” in the autopsy report, although it remains unclear who was navigating the boat.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Third-ranked Clemson was in danger of taking its first loss of the season until DeShaun Watson hit Jordan Leggett for a 34-yard touchdown with 2:02 remaining to give the Tigers a 37-34 win at No. 12 Florida State. Watson completed 27 of 43 passes for 378 yards with two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions, and he also ran for 52 yards as the Tigers improved to 8-0. Wayne Gallman had 82 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns to help the Tigers extend their regular-season winning streak to 22 games.

UNDATED (AP) — Seventh-ranked Nebraska and No. 8 Baylor were each handed their first loss of the season. Eleventh-ranked Wisconsin knocked off the seventh-rated Cornhuskers 23-17 on Dare Ogunbowale’s 11-yard scoring run in overtime. Texas knocked off Baylor for the second straight year as Trent Domingue nailed a 39-yard field goal with 46 seconds remaining to push the Longhorns past the Bears, 35-34.

UNDATED (AP) — Tenth-ranked West Virginia and No. 13 Boise St. are no longer among the unbeaten teams in college football. Mason Rudolph threw three touchdown passes and ran for a score to help Oklahoma State upset the Mountaineers, 37-20 at Stillwater. Defensive tackle Chase Appleby sacked Brett Rypien and forced a fumble for a safety with 1:25 left to give Wyoming a 30-28 upset victory over No. 13 Boise State.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Grant Kraemer threw for 304 yards and two touchdowns, Conley Wilkins rushed for two scores, and Drake held off Campbell for a 33-21 win on Saturday. Drake (4-4, 3-2 Pioneer Football League) took advantage of two early Campbell mistakes en route to a 17-0 lead after one quarter.

After a Camels fumble, Kraemer found Andrew Yarwood for a 6-yard TD to put the Bulldogs up 7-0. Campbell (3-4, 1-3) drove 57 yards on 12 plays on its next possession, but an interception and 58-yard return put Drake on the Camels’ 17-yard line. Two plays later, Kraemer threw another TD pass – this time to Zach Zlabis for 12 yards.

Anthony Robbins, who threw for 298 yards for the Camels, had touchdown passes in the second and third quarter to get Campbell within 20-14. But Wilkins scored on second-half touchdown runs of 2 and 5 yards, the latter with 8:35 remaining to give Drake a 33-21 lead, and the Bulldogs’ defense held firm.

Its Homecoming in Ames today (Saturday), as the Iowa State Cyclones take a 1-6 record against Kansas State. The Wildcats have won the last eight games in the series and ISU coach Matt Campbell says to get things turned around the Cyclones must find a way to solve one of the best defenses in the Big-12. Campbell says one of the strengths of the K-State defense is the linebacking corps.

Iowa State has been good in the red zone this season and that will need to continue against the Wildcats. Kickoff in Jack Trice Stadium is 11:00 a.m. The game will be televised by Fox Sports Net.

Indians starter Josh Tomlin went 4 2/3 innings, then Andrew Miller, Bryan Shaw and Allen took over. The Cubs have been blanked four times in the last eight games this postseason.
