Chiefs finally rely on blueprint for victory in Oakland

Sports

October 18th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — It took the Kansas City Chiefs four games and a bye week ruminating over an embarrassing loss to Pittsburgh before they finally were able to execute their blueprint for victory. The Oakland Raiders wound up on the receiving end of it.

In a crucial AFC West matchup on Sunday, the Chiefs were able to dictate the tempo of the game with their robust ground game and to put quarterback Alex Smith into smart passing situations. The Chiefs’ defense also made life miserable for Raiders quarterback Derek Carr.

Smith acknowledges the Chiefs’ frustrations had been mounting. He deflected much of the praise to the team’s running backs. The Chiefs ran for 183 yards and passed for 223 — the kind of split they believe is ideal to get a win. Smith had his best day of the season, going 19-of-23 even without throwing a touchdown pass.

CHICAGO (AP) — Clayton Kershaw defused the Cubs’ bats, pitching the Dodgers to a 1-0 win in Game 2 of the NLCS. The Dodgers left-hander retired the first 14 hitters he faced and only gave up two hits in seven innings while striking out six and walking one. Adrian Gonzalez homered in the second inning off of Chicago starter Kyle Hendricks to help tie the series at a game each.

GREEN BAY, Wisc. (AP) — Dak Prescott continued his impressive rookie season by throwing for 247 yards and three touchdowns in the Cowboys’ 30-16 win over Green Bay. Prescott set an NFL record for most consecutive passes without an interception to open a career with 176. Safety Morgan Burnett ended the streak with a diving interception late in the third quarter.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Tom Brady made a successful return to Gillette Stadium by throwing for 376 yards and three touchdowns in a 35-17 win over Cincinnati. Brady played his first game at home since last season’s playoff after serving a four-game suspension for his part in “Deflategate.”

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Will Lutz booted a 52-yard field goal with 11 seconds left while Drew Brees threw for 465 yards and four touchdowns to give New Orleans a 41-38 win over Carolina. Panthers quarterback Cam Newton return after missing a game with a concussion. He threw for 322 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score as the defending NFC champs fell to 1-5.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Kevin Harvick roared to the front on the final restart to win the Sprint Cup race at Kansas Speedway. Harvick held off Carl Edwards over the final 30 laps to advance to the round of eight in the Chase playoffs.

Ware, Smith help lead Chiefs to 26-10 over Raiders

Sports

October 16th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Spencer Ware ran for a career-high 131 yards and a touchdown and Alex Smith picked apart Oakland’s struggling defense in the Kansas City Chiefs’ 26-10 win over the Raiders on Sunday. In their first game since getting blown out by 29 points in Pittsburgh two weeks ago, the Chiefs (3-2) efficiently handled a Raiders team that had overcome defensive shortcomings with a big-play offense to lead the AFC West.

Smith completed 19 of 22 passes for 224 yards, Jamaal Charles and big defensive lineman Dontari Poe each ran for scores and the Chiefs forced two turnovers by Derek Carr to dampen a fast start to the season by the Raiders (4-2), who are trying to end a 13-year playoff drought. Marcus Peters set up Ware’s TD run with an early interception of Carr and Dee Ford forced a fumble from Carr in the fourth quarter to end any hopes of a late comeback.

After allowing a touchdown on the opening drive, the Chiefs held the Raiders to one field goal the rest of the way in a thorough victory that improved coach Andy Reid to 16-2 following a bye.
