AP Source: Chiefs sign second-round pick Chris Jones to deal

Sports

May 6th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that the Kansas City Chiefs and second-round draft pick Chris Jones have agreed to terms on a contract. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Thursday because the team had not announced the deal.

The Chiefs traded away their first-round pick last weekend, so Jones was their first selection with the 37th overall pick. The 6-foot-6, 308-pound defensive tackle out of Mississippi State is the first of their eight picks to sign, though most should be in the fold by this weekend.

The Chiefs begin a three-day rookie minicamp Saturday. Jones should join a defensive line rotation that includes Dontari Poe, Jaye Howard and Allen Bailey but lost veteran Mike DeVito to retirement. Nick Williams and Rakeem Nunez-Roches are also on the roster.

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Jaime Garcia pitched seven sharp innings, Brandon Moss hit a long home run and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-0 on Thursday. Stephen Piscotty drove in two runs and also made an outstanding catch in right field to help preserve the shutout. St. Louis won three of four in the series.

Garcia (2-2) gave up two hits, didn’t walk a batter and struck out five. Moss launched a drive estimated at 462 feet to right field in the first off Jerad Eickhoff (1-4). It was the longest homer by a left-handed hitter in the history of the new Busch Stadium, which opened in 2006.

Holliday gives Cardinals 5-4 win over Phillies

Sports

May 5th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Matt Holliday’s RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the St. Louis Cardinals a 5-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night. The Cardinals had lost five of their last six games while the Phillies had won seven of eight and 10 of 12.

St. Louis loaded the bases with one out in the ninth inning against Phillies closer Jeanmar Gomez. Stephen Piscotty delivered an RBI infield single to tie the game. Holliday then smacked a single through the left side of the infield to drive in plate the winning run.

Ryan Howard’s seventh homer of the season, a three-run shot to center field in the fourth inning, gave the Phillies a 3-0 lead. It was the St. Louis native’s 23rd homer in 67 career games against the Cardinals. Odubel Herrera added a solo home run in the fifth, his third, to make it 4-0.
