Chiefs hold off Raiders 21-13 to take control of AFC West

Sports

December 9th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Tyreek Hill had touchdowns receiving and on a punt return, Kansas City’s defense made life miserable for Oakland quarterback Derek Carr, and the Chiefs beat the Raiders 21-13 on a frigid Thursday night to take control of the AFC West. Charcandrick West also had a touchdown run for the Chiefs (10-3). They moved into a first-place tie with Oakland (10-3) but holds the tiebreaker with two wins over their longtime divisional rival.

Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce had five catches for 101 yards, his fourth consecutive game with at least 100 yards receiving. That matches the franchise record set by former tight end Tony Gonzalez.

Up next: Oakland remains in the AFC West when it heads to slumping San Diego on Dec. 18. Kansas City continues its three-game homestand Dec. 18 against Tennessee.

Cards to hold news conference amid reports of Fowler deal

Sports

December 9th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have scheduled a news conference for Friday morning amid reports they’ve reached an agreement with free agent center fielder Dexter Fowler on a multiyear deal. KSDK-TV in St. Louis first reported the deal Thursday night. The conference is scheduled for 10 a.m. CST.

Fowler is a free agent for a second consecutive offseason after returning to the Chicago Cubs in February on a one-year contract worth $13 million. He broke out in his second season on Chicago’s North Side, making his first All-Star Game while batting .276 with 13 home runs and a career-best .393 on-base percentage. He had a pair of home runs during the World Series, helping the Cubs end a 108-year title drought.

The lanky 30-year-old from Atlanta is a .268 career hitter over nine seasons with Colorado, Houston and the Cubs. He would likely to slot into the Cardinals’ leadoff spot, giving St. Louis a switch-hitter ahead of lefty-hitting Matt Carpenter and righties Aledmys Diaz, Stephen Piscotty and Yadier Molina.

Peter Jok scores 23, Iowa upsets No. 25 Iowa State 78-64

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Peter Jok scored 23 points and Iowa upset 25th-ranked Iowa State 78-64 on Thursday, snapping a three-game losing streak against its instate rival. Isaiah Moss had 14 points to help the Hawkeyes (5-5) beat a Power Five opponent for this first time this season.

Iowa shot 59 percent in the first half, including 6 of 10 from 3-point range, and jumped ahead by as much as 46-29. The Cyclones (6-3) slowly chipped away at that deficit in the second half, but a 7-0 run by the Hawkeyes after Iowa State got to 60-53 finished them off.

Matt Thomas scored 14 points to lead the Cyclones, who were just 8 of 30 from 3-point range. Ball movement was again an issue for Iowa State, which had just nine assists on 25 made baskets — although it did miss about a dozen layups.

Iowa Women hold serve at home against Iowa State

The Iowa Women’s Basketball team made 13 three-pointers on their way to protecting their home court against the Iowa State Cyclones in an 88-76 win on Wednesday night. The home team has now won the last 10 games in the rivalry series.

Tania Davis led the Hawkeye attack with 23 points that included 7 of 11 shooting and 5 of 6 from three point range.  Davis didn’t miss a three point attempt until 8 minutes left in the game.  Iowa improves to 7-3 on the season with the win.

Iowa State failed to capitalize on their team strength and only hit 6 of 28 from three-point range in the loss. The Cyclones fall to 6-2 on the young season.

Iowa takes an 8-7 lead in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series with the men’s hoops teams set to take the floor at Carver-Hawkeye arena tonight.  Wrestling will compete on Saturday in Iowa City as well.

No. 25 Iowa State looks to extend dominance over Hawkeyes

Sports

December 8th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Iowa still has a commanding lead in the series but Iowa State has dominated recent history and the 25th ranked Cyclones are heavily favored to make it seven of eight when the teams collide in Iowa City tonight (Thursday night), beginning at 7 o’clock. The Hawkeyes are 5-5 and in their five losses gave up an average of 91 points. Fran McCaffery needs to find a way to slow down coach Steve Prohm’s Cyclone squad that is averaging more than 85 points per game.

A concern for Iowa is inexperienced point guard play against Iowa State star Monte Morris. McCaffery says the Cyclones are vastly improved defensively over last year.
He calls this the best non-conference rivalry he has been a part of.

Prohm says the Cyclones need to contain Iowa senior Peter Jok, who is averaging just under 24 points per game. This is Prohm’s second year at ISU but it did not take him long to discover what this rivalry means.

The Cyclones are 6-2. The Hawkeyes lead the all-time series 43-26.
