LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Sara Hammond scored a season-high 19 points, Myisha Hines Allen added 16 and No. 7 Louisville ran away quickly from No. 22 Iowa for an 86-52 rout Thursday night in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Seeking a good tuneup before Sunday’s Bluegrass battle against No. 13 Kentucky, the Cardinals (8-0) never trailed in racing to an impressive first win over a ranked team this season. Hammond’s 9-of-13 shooting led Louisville’s 35-of-66 performance from the field, its fifth 50-percent shooting effort this season; the Cardinals held the Hawkeyes (6-2) to 30 percent.

Freshman Mariya Moore had 12 points and six assists, and senior guard Bria Smith added 10 points and seven rebounds for the Cardinals, who dominated the Hawkeyes 58-32 in the paint along with outrebounding them 50-38.

Bethany Doolittle scored 12 points for Iowa, which fell to 0-2 against Louisville, with both meetings coming this year.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – Nebraska has hired Oregon State’s Mike Riley as its new football coach, replacing the fired Bo Pelini. Athletic director Shawn Eichorst announced Riley’s hiring on Thursday. Riley has spent 14 seasons over two tenures at Oregon State, leading the Beavers to 93 wins and a 6-2 record in bowl games.

Riley is a native of Idaho and a graduate of Alabama, where he played for Paul “Bear” Bryant. Riley will be introduced at a news conference Friday. He’ll take over immediately but will not coach the Cornhuskers in their bowl game. Nebraska assistant Barney Cotton is interim head coach.

Oregon State finished this season 5-7 overall, 2-7 in the Pac-12.

Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) say customers who have snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), off-road utility vehicles (ORVs), or off road motorcycles (ORMs) registered with the DNR, will need to renew their registrations by December 31st. Registrations can be renewed by any county recorder office or on the DNR’s website at www.iowadnr.gov. User permits can be purchased at any location where hunting licenses are sold including the Iowa DNR website. After December 31 customers can still renew their registration but they will pay a $5 penalty.

Resident Snowmobiles

Iowa residents are required to have and display a current Iowa DNR registration and user permit on their snowmobile in order to lawfully operate on any public land or public ice in Iowa.

Nonresident Snowmobiles

Nonresident snowmobilers are required to have and display a current registration from their home state and display a current Iowa DNR user permit. If a nonresident resides in a state that does not require or offer snowmobile registration, the only requirement is to display an Iowa DNR user permit.

Resident Off-Highway Vehicles

Iowa residents must have and display a current Iowa DNR registration on their ATV, ORV, or ORM to operate on any designated public land or ice in Iowa. Residents are not required to display an Iowa DNR user permit.

Nonresident Off-Highway Vehicles

Non-residents are required to have their machines registered in their home state and display an Iowa DNR user permit.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have John Lackey at a bargain price next season, but may be willing to sweeten the deal. General manager John Mozeliak said Wednesday he’d meet with the agent for the 36-year-old right-hander at the winter meetings next week. “I wouldn’t rule anything out there,” Mozeliak said.

Lackey’s contract calls for a $500,000 salary next season, the major league minimum, because he missed the 2012 season while recovering from reconstructive elbow surgery. The right-hander just completed an $82.5 million, five-year contract he signed with Boston. Lackey was traded from the Red Sox to St. Louis last July. He went a combined 14-10 with a 3.83 ERA and was 1-0 in two postseason starts for the NL Central champion Cardinals.

Mozeliak also said former Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter would not return to the front office after serving one season after his retirement. “I think in Carp’s case, he wasn’t ready to truly commit to the job,” Mozeliak said. “For all of you who know Chris Carpenter, it’s all-in or he prefers to be all-out.”

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Mike Gesell hit a driving layup through contact for the go-ahead three-point play with 1:16 left, helping Iowa upset No. 12 North Carolina 60-55 on Wednesday night in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Gesell finished with 16 points for the Hawkeyes (6-2), who outfought the Tar Heels (5-2) on a night when both teams struggled to shoot straight.

Gesell’s basket was the team’s first after a 4-minute drought, but it ended up providing the winning margin on a night when the Hawkeyes won despite shooting 33 percent and going 3 for 20 from 3-point range. After UNC’s Marcus Paige missed a 3-pointer for the tie, Gesell hit two free throws with 1 second left to seal a win that had Hawkeyes players running onto the court to celebrate at the horn.

Kennedy Meeks had 15 points and 12 rebounds for UNC, which shot just 28 percent and never found any type of offensive rhythm.

Hunters planning to be in the timber for Saturday’s opening day of the first shotgun deer season should consider buying their license soon to avoid waiting in line at the license sales counter. Officials with the Iowa DNR say fewer than half of the expected 70,000 hunters have purchased their deer license as of Wednesday morning. A weekend weather forecast with temperatures favorable for hunting could lead to additional hunters choosing to go during the first shotgun season rather than second.

“Good weather usually means more people will be hunting and staying in the field longer which can lead to higher success rates,” said Willie Suchy, wildlife research supervisor for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

Successful hunters are reminded to report their deer harvest by midnight the day after the deer is recovered. For hunters with Internet access, the online harvest reporting is the easiest way to register the deer. Hunters can report their deer online at www.iowadnr.gov, by calling the toll free reporting number 1-800-771-4692, or at any license vendor.

Accurately reporting the harvest is an important part of Iowa’s deer management program and plays a vital role in managing deer populations and future hunting opportunities. Reporting the harvest is required by law. Hunters will be checked for compliance.
