Wacha goes 2 perfect innings, Cardinals lose to Red Sox 3-0

Sports

March 9th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Michael Wacha struck out four of the six batters he faced in his spring debut Monday in the St. Louis Cardinals’ 3-0 loss to the Boston Red Sox. Wacha threw 27 pitches in two perfect innings. A postseason sensation in 2013, Wacha missed most of last year because of an injured right shoulder. He pitched to big league hitters for the first time since allowing a three-run homer in the ninth inning to San Francisco’s Travis Ishikawa in the clinching Game 5 of the NL Championship Series last October.

Boston center fielder Mookie Betts saved at least one run when he took a hit away from Yadier Molina with a running catch with two outs and the bases loaded in the second. Betts also hit an RBI single with two outs in the seventh. Red Sox left-hander Wade Miley worked three scoreless innings in his second outing.

Oklahoma’s Buddy Hield honored as Big 12 AP Player of Year

Sports

March 9th, 2015 by Jim Field

Oklahoma junior guard Buddy Hield and Bill Self of Kansas are The Associated Press’ Big 12 player and coach of the year.

Hield, the Big 12’s top scorer at 17.4 points a game, was the only unanimous pick on the AP All-Big 12 first team. The yearly awards were announced Monday.

Self is the first four-time AP Big 12 Coach of the Year winner, edging West Virginia coach Bob Huggins for this year’s award.

West Virginia senior guard Juwan Staten is the only player who is an AP first-team pick for the second straight year.

Joining Hield and Staten on the first team are Baylor post player Rico Gathers, who averages 11.6 points and 11.7 rebounds, Kansas junior Perry Ellis and Iowa State junior Georges Niang.

No. 11 Northern Iowa beats Illinois State for Valley title

Sports

March 9th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Seth Tuttle had 15 points, nine rebounds and three assists, leading No. 11 Northern Iowa back from an 18-point first-half deficit to beat Illinois State 69-60 in the Missouri Valley Conference tournament championship game on Sunday. Nate Buss added 12 points and the Panthers (30-3) took control with a 25-4 run that erased a 36-22 deficit at the break. Jeremy Morgan had three 3-pointers in the run and Tuttle, the Valley player of the year and tournament MVP, added eight points, often getting loose from constant double-teaming.

Daishon Knight had 16 points for fourth-seeded Illinois State (21-12), which needed a win to make the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1998. Knight had 25 points in the Redbirds’ semifinal upset of top seed Wichita State. Northern Iowa won the title for the third time in seven years and has won 19 of 20 games.

AP Sources: Chiefs LB Hali restructures; Maclin in sights

Sports

March 9th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Tamba Hali has agreed to restructure his contract, freeing up salary cap space that the club is using to pursue wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, two people familiar with the situation told The Associated Press. The people spoke on condition of anonymity Sunday night because the Chiefs do not comment on contract matters. Hali would have counted $12 million against the salary cap in the final year of the $57 million, five-year contract that he signed before the 2011 season.

Maclin appeared poised to reunite with Chiefs coach Andy Reid, who traded up to grab him out of Missouri in the 2009 draft. ESPN.com reported that Maclin will sign with Kansas City when the NFL’s free-agency period begins Tuesday.

Lynn leaves game with hip injury as Cardinals beat Marlins

Sports

March 8th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) – Right-hander Lance Lynn left the St. Louis Cardinals’ spring training game in the second inning Sunday with a left hip flexor strain, but six relievers combined to allow only one run in a 5-2 victory over the Miami Marlins. Lynn said the injury wasn’t serious, but he’ll be reevaluated Monday. Making his first start of spring training, Lynn retired the side in order in the first inning. In the second he gave up back to back walks, and then departed after the next batter reached on an error.

The Cardinals’ Tommy Pham homered on his 27th birthday, and teammate Randal Grichuk hit his second home run in as many days. Miami’s Jarred Cosart, making his first start of spring training, struck out two in two perfect innings.

Harlan beats Western Dubuque 56-46 for 2nd straight 4A title

Sports

March 8th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Taylor Frederick scored 17 points and teamed with Jess Schaben to dominate play around the basket as Harlan beat Western Dubuque 56-46 Saturday night to win its second straight Class 4A state championship. Top-ranked Harlan’s victory in the battle of unbeaten teams came with little drama and capped an impressive run through this year’s tournament. The Cyclones (26-0) won their first two games at state by 23 and 26 points before their solid victory over No. 2 Western Dubuque (25-1), which also lost to Harlan in last year’s state finals.

Schaben added 14 points, nine rebounds and six blocks and Elle Kloewer scored 11 for Harlan, which ran its two-year winning streak to 52. Megan Maahs led Western Dubuque with 18 points and 12 rebounds, and Morgan Pitz scored 10.
