Des Moines wins bid to host NCAA tourney again

Sports

April 19th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

The N-C-A-A men’s basketball tournament is returning to Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines in 2019. The president of the Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau, Greg Edwards, got emotional a couple of times Tuesday as he talked with reporters following the announcement by the N-C-A-A. Edwards says winning the bid to host the tourney is as big a deal for the organizing committee as it is for the teams who play their way in.

Greg Edwards

Des Moines hosted the first two rounds in 2016, but Edwards says they knew they weren’t guaranteed to get another bid. “So when we sat down and began strategizing with this round, we knew the N-C-A-A was very pleased with some of the things we did and we had several follow up meetings with them since 2016. But, we continue to really create that bond between ourselves and the N-C-A-A staff, which I think is very important. and we do have a very strong bond with a lot of the basketball teammembers from the N-C-A-A,” Edwards said.

Edwards says the tickets sold out quickly for the rounds in Des Moines, and he says the turnout for the free day to watch practice made an impression. That was a huge thing for the N-C-A-A. They said they’d never seen any practice rounds so full,” according to Edwards. “They sold more merchandise out of the Wells Fargo Arena that day than they’d ever sold in any other arena. So, that was pretty cool.”

He says the announcement now sets things into motion for 2019. We’ll start really immediately hosting our local organizing committee meetings talking about everything from logistics to airport to transportation and on and on,”Edwards says. “We’ll have everything double crossed off by the time 2019 rolls around.”

Des Moines’ first tourney included big names teams like Kansas, Kentucky and Indiana, which put even more of a spotlight on the venue. Wells Fargo Arena Manager Chris Connolly says the timing of the tournament works well in the sports schedule. He says the N-C-A-A Tournament is after the boys and girls state tournaments, and the Wild hockey team and Energy basketball team understand that it is a good thing for Des Moines and don’t mind having the time blocked out.

The Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau estimates the 2016 tournament had a five million dollar impact on the area.

Omaha is 2020 site for NCAA events in basketball, volleyball

Sports

April 19th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha will host first- and second-round games in the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament and the Division I women’s volleyball final four in 2020. The NCAA on Tuesday announced sites for Division I, II and III championship events for 2017-18 through 2021-22.

Omaha’s CenturyLink Center hosted early games in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament in 2008, 2012 and 2015. The Midwest Regional will be played at the arena in 2018. The volleyball final four comes to Omaha a fourth time. The city previously hosted the volleyball championships in 2006, 2008 and 2015.

Omaha will not get the men’s ice hockey Frozen Four in this cycle of championships. Though the University of Nebraska-Lincoln does not sponsor ice hockey, it submitted a bid to host the event at CenturyLink Center.

Fowler, Leake lead Cardinals past Marte-less Pirates 2-1

Sports

April 19th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Dexter Fowler tripled and scored, Mike Leake pitched into the seventh inning and the St. Louis Cardinals beat Pittsburgh 2-1 on Tuesday night after Pirates outfielder Starling Marte was suspended 80 games for a banned substance earlier in the day.

Seung Hwan Oh allowed three hits in the ninth but escaped a one-out, bases-loaded jam for his second save. Leake (2-1) allowed seven hits and only struck out one, but he held the Pirates to a run over 6 1/3 innings. He has won nine of his last 11 decisions against the Pirates dating to Sept. 11, 2012.

The Cardinals have won back-to-back games for the first time this season to improve to 5-9. Chad Kuhl (1-1) gave up two runs over six innings. He allowed three hits and struck out three.

Ex-Iowa official’s discrimination lawsuit goes to trial

News, Sports

April 19th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — An attorney for a former University of Iowa athletic administrator described her as an outstanding employee on track to head a college program until she was unfairly demoted and later laid off for discriminatory reasons.

Attorney Thomas Newkirk gave former administrator Jane Meyer’s view of her firing Tuesday in during opening statements of the trial over her lawsuit against the school. The trial is expected to offer a glimpse into big-time college sports with testimony by athletic director Gary Barta, head football coach Kirk Ferentz and others.

If they agree with Meyer, jurors could award her damages for pay and emotional distress. Assistant attorney general George Carroll responded that Meyer was moved out of the athletics department because of her performance and not due to discrimination.

Iowa, Iowa State renew series through 2023

Sports

April 18th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

Iowa and Iowa State announced Tuesday that their annual series has been extended through 2023, temporarily quelling fears that the matchup could be on the way out.

The Hawkeyes and Cyclones tacked two years onto a matchup that’s been contested every season since 1977. The Hawkeyes lead the series 42-22.

There was concern that Iowa might want to put the series on pause now that the Big Ten has moved to a nine-game schedule. But the series between the instate rivals has been tight in recent years — save for Iowa’s 42-3 thrashing of the Cyclones in 2016 — and Iowa State’s facilities have improved to the point where a push for Big 12 relevance might not be far off.

Iowa State hosts the Hawkeyes on Sept. 9.

Members of the Griswold School District’s Board of Education Monday evening, voted unanimously in favor of switching athletic conferences. Superintendent Dave Henrichs..

(He says the Board voted 5-0 to leave the WIC Conference and join the Corner Conference, beginning with the 2018-19 school year.)

(He says some include comparable school sizes, closer travel, a comparison of activities, and because it was a better fit for the district’s students.)
