No. 24 TCU snaps 3-game skid with 96-73 over Iowa State

Sports

January 18th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Vladimir Brodziansky had 26 points and No. 24 TCU snapped a three-game losing streak with a 96-73 win over Iowa State on Wednesday night, when the Horned Frogs played for the first time without injured starting point guard Jaylen Fisher.

Donovan Jackson had 19 points for Iowa State (10-6, 1-5). Cameron Lard and Lindell Wigginton each had 16. Even while they shot 51 percent from the field (30 of 59), the Cyclones couldn’t gain any momentum coming off their first Big 12 victory Saturday against Baylor. Wigginton, the freshman who was the Big 12 newcomer of the week after games with 30 and 27 points last week, had only two points at halftime after he got two fouls in the first 9 minutes.

Another ranked opponent is next for the Cyclones, who host No. 8 Texas Tech on Saturday.

Brown, Cox help No. 4 Baylor roll past Iowa State, 79-50

Sports

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Kalani Brown scored 25 points, Lauren Cox had 21 points, 15 rebounds and a career-high nine blocks, and No. 4 Baylor beat Iowa State 79-50 on Wednesday for its 13th straight win. Kristy Wallace scored 16 points for the Lady Bears (16-1, 6-0 Big 12), who never trailed in picking up their sixth straight league win by at least 22 points.

Bridget Carelton had 24 points for the Cyclones, who’ve lost five of six. It’s no shame to lose to a team as talented as Baylor. But barring a miracle, the Cyclones will miss the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three years after earning nine straight bids. Though coach Bill Fennelly has a lifetime contract for a reason, next year will be crucial for a program used to competing at a high level.

Iowa State hosts No. 17 West Virginia on Saturday.

Griswold boys hoops edge out Riverside in tense finish

Sports

January 16th, 2018 by admin

The Griswold Tigers boys basketball team survived a last second three attempt from the Riverside Bulldogs for a 37-35 victory on Tuesday night in Oakland.  After Morgan Mundorf missed two free throws for the Tigers, 3 seconds were left for Riverside’s last chance. AJ Dillon raced up the floor and got a look from a few feet outside the top of the key and his game winning attempt fell wide right. The Tigers grabbed their second win of the season and avenged an earlier three point loss to the Bulldogs.

Griswold trailed by one at the end of the first half but scored the first eight points of the second half and in the process took their first lead of the game. The Tigers led by four heading into the final period and did just enough to pick up the win. The Tigers could of made the win a little more comfortable but finished just 9-24 from the free throw line.

Morgan Mundorf led the way for Griswold’s win with a monster double-double of 18 points and 18 rebounds. Josh Brownlee chipped in 8 points for the now 2-12 Tigers. They travel next to Treynor on Friday.

AJ Dillon had 20 points and 6 steals for the Bulldogs as they fall to 2-11 with the loss. They host Audubon on Friday night.

Mateya Peters led all scorers with 13 points and she also grabbed 6 rebounds for Griswold. The Tigers improved to 6-8 with the win. They next travel to Treynor on Friday night.

Fans can vie online for College World Series season tickets

Sports

January 16th, 2018 by admin

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Fans can apply for season tickets to the College World Series under a new selection process.

CWS officials announced Tuesday that fans who apply online by midnight on March 1 will be eligible for a random drawing to buy up to four season tickets. The Division I baseball championship is held at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha each June.

People can apply at NCAA.com/CWSTickets and CWSomaha.com. The number of tickets available will be based on existing season-ticket holder renewals.

The names drawn for season tickets will receive email notice by March 6. Costs range from $425 to $493, with the seats renewable every year.

The new process replaces the waiting list, which ended last year after all waiting list members were given the option to purchase tickets for the 2017 CWS.
