News

July 11th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

The U-S Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa reports a Pottawattamie County man was sentenced today (Thursday) to a little more than four-years in prison on a weapons charge. 24-year Jordan James Collier, of Council Bluffs was sentenced in U-S District Court on a charge of illegal possession of a machine gun. Chief United States District Court Judge James E. Gritzner sentenced Collier to 51 months in prison, to be followed by 1 year of supervised release. Collier was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment for the Crime Victim Fund, and to forfeit the machine gun and two other firearms he had possessed.

In addition, Chief Judge Gritzner ordered Collier to pay $1,200 in restitution to the person from whom Collier had stolen the firearms. Collier remained in the custody of the United States Marshal’s Service pending either designation of the Federal Bureau of Prisons facility at which he will serve his federal sentence, or surrender to Pottawattamie County or Kossuth County authorities regarding State of Iowa charges pending against Collier in those counties.

Collier was sentenced upon his plea of guilty entered on February 8, 2013, to illegal possession of a machine gun. Collier was arrested subsequent to an investigation by the Council Bluffs Police Department regarding two rifles which Collier pawned at a local pawn shop. The firearms were determined to have been stolen from a residence in Kossuth County, Iowa. Collier had also attempted to pawn the machine gun. The machine gun was a functional Swiss-K Vietnam War era automatic rifle.

The sentence imposed upon Collier also took into account that the three firearms were stolen. This case was investigated by the Council Bluffs, Iowa, Police Department, with assistance from the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Department, and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.

Corn crop harvest estimates downgraded slightly

Ag/Outdoor, News

July 11th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – The U.S. Department of Agriculture has slightly lowered its estimate of the corn crop, reflecting late planting in the Corn Belt caused by a wet spring.    Farmers are now expected to harvest 13.95 billion bushels, 55 million fewer bushels than predicted in June. That still beats the 2009 record by about 858 million bushels.

The supply of corn is likely to shrink this summer because of last year’s small, drought-affected harvest of 11 billion bushels and this year’s delayed planting, so prices will likely remain high.  That’s good for farmers selling grain, but will increase the cost of corn-based feed for livestock producers raising cattle, chickens and pigs. Food prices aren’t likely to be affected much by the change.

Harlan energy audit results are complete

News

July 11th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

The findings of an energy audit conducted by Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities (IAMU) for the City of Harlan have been released. Officials with Harlan Municipal Utilities say included in the report are specific recommendations on how to decrease electric, gas and water use at City facilities. Street lights and traffic signals are the largest energy consumers followed by the swimming pool, the waste water treatment plant and Veteran’s Memorial Building.

HMU says the audit was a necessary and productive effort in order to save money to citizens in Harlan. The new street lights and traffic signals will have a big impact on the savings. The utility company converted the stop lights to LED lights and is in the process of changing all street lights over to LED lights as well. The savings is estimated around 50 percent and that will the savings will be passed on to the consumers.

HMU Additional buildings and facilities included in the audit were: City Hall/Police station, C.G. Therkildsen Activity Center, Waste Water Treatment Plan, Developsource Building, the Library, the fire station, Dog Pound, Parks and Rec building, and the street maintenance building.
