Registration is being accepted now through October 18^th, for women landowners interested in conservation. Women who own or manage farmland in western Iowa are invited to the free conservation discussion Sponsored by the Women, Food and Agriculture Network (WFAN). The session will take place Saturday, October 20th at Hitchcock Nature Center near Honey Creek, IA.

Coffee and registration begin at 9:30 a.m. A free lunch is being provided. The discussion will focus on identifying, establishing, and protecting wetlands. All women landowners are welcome, regardless of whether you have wetlands on your property now. The event is part of WFAN’s Women Caring for the Land^SM series, in collaboration with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and other partners.

Smoke will be rising from the Rock Island Depot area in Atlantic this weekend, but residents shouldn’t be alarmed—it’s all part of the Atlantic Area of Chamber of Commerce’s & McCurdy Pumpkins’ Harvest Fest activities. A new event, “Rib Fest” will take place Friday, Oct. 12^th, from 8 p.m. to midnight. Admission is free for live music from country, rock, and blues band “Dirt Road Acoustic Rehab.” In addition, rib samples will be available for one dollar each, and includes a slip to vote for People’s Choice ribs. A beverage garden will be open during the festivities as well.

The cooking will continue through the night as smokers prepare pulled pork and beef brisket to be judged on Saturday afternoon. AtlantiCash prizes will be awarded for the top three places in both categories. A Harvest Feast of beef brisket or pulled pork sandwich, potato chips, apple pie, and ice cream will be served at 5-p.m., Saturday. The $7 meal includes a beverage. Partnering with the Atlantic Fire Department, the Chamber will also host the Isiserettes Drill & Drum Corp. and the Salem Stepping Saints for a performance at the Depot at 5-p.m., prior to the Atlantic Firemen’s Parade at 6.

The first of a series of debates between Congressman Leonard Boswell and Congressman Tom Latham took place last night (Tuesday) in Creston. The 90-minute exchange included topics ranging from the farm bill to health care and education to the deficit. Democrat Boswell noted one of the biggest problems looming, is the deficit. Latham said despite the economic difficulties, there are still things that need to be done, like passing a Farm Bill.

He says farmers are willing to contribute to the deficit reduction, by doing away with Direct Payments, revising counter-cyclical payments if there is a safety net such as crop insurance, and through risk management tools.  Boswell agrees the farm bill needs to be passed. He also sees the need for rural infrastructure, and suggests ways to pay for it. He says they have to look at the revenue side of the equation, because of infrastructure costs.

Staying competitive in the global economy was a topic of discussion. Latham looks to the community college system and programs like Iowa’s STEM initiative. He says people need to understand they should be trained for marketable skills to fill the jobs and careers that are available today in the work force. Boswell and Latham are facing off in November to represent the Third District. Latham is seeking his 10th term, Boswell his 9th.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) – A 26-year-old Iowan has been given 80 months in federal prison for two more drug convictions.  Federal prosecutors say Roscoe Perry, of Sioux City, pleaded guilty to selling crack cocaine and conspiracy. Perry admitted selling cocaine from October 2011 through February this year. Prosecutors say Perry traveled to Omaha, Neb., to obtain the crack cocaine he sold in Sioux City.  Perry had been convicted in November 2006 in U.S. District Court in Nebraska for selling crack.  Perry must serve eight years of supervised release after he leaves prison.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa farmers are close to wrapping up this year’s harvest as they work to get drought-damage crops out of the fields as cooler weather arrives. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says 76 percent of the corn has been harvested, which is a month ahead of normal. Eighty percent of the soybeans are in from the fields, which is two weeks ahead of normal.

The USDA says in Tuesday’s report that the corn condition is 47 percent poor or very poor, 33 percent fair and 20 percent in good or excellent shape. Soybeans are 31 percent poor or very poor, 37 percent fair and 32 percent in good or excellent condition.  The statewide average rainfall was .05 inches. It’s the 20th week of the past 22 with below normal precipitation.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – A father has appealed an Iowa judge’s ruling that requires him to travel across the country to take his two children to visit their mother while she serves prison time for first-degree murder. Michael Roberts said Tuesday his attorney appealed the ruling last week. Judge Nancy Whittenburg ordered Roberts last month to take his children from California to visit Tracey Richter at the women’s prison in Mitchellville three times while she appeals her conviction. The judge says Roberts also cannot move back to his native Australia until then.

Whittenburg says the 14-year-old boy and 12-year-old girl have a positive history with Richter. She says the visits will help them bring closure to events that ended with Richter being convicted in the 2001 execution-style death of neighbor Dustin Wehde in the Sac County town of Early.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports a Villisca man was arrested Tuesday afternoon. 50-year old Gary Lee Mattson was taken into custody on a valid Montgomery County warrant for Contempt/Illegal Resistance to Order or Process. Mattson was brought to the Montgomery County Jail and held on $800 bond.

Three people suffered what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries, during a rollover accident Tuesday night, north of Atlantic. According to dispatch reports from the Cass County Communications Center, the accident happened at around 10-p.m. on Buck Creek Road, near the intersection with Eastland Street. The victims were out of the vehicle when law enforcement arrived on the scene, prior to Atlantic Fire and Rescue. No other details are available early this morning.
