Red Oak man arrested on assault charge

Police in Red Oak, Monday night, arrested 43-year old Christopher Dean Vannausdle, of Red Oak, on an assault charge. Vannausdle was taken into custody at around just before 10-p.m. in the 100 block of E. Prospect Street for Domestic Abuse Assault. The man was being held without bond in the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Center .

Bluffs Police search for missing teen

Police in Council Bluffs are asking for your help in locating a missing teenager. 16-year old Alicia Keasling was reported missing to the Council Bluffs Police Department on Nov. 24th.teen1 Alicia was last seen wearing a grey Gap sweatshirt and blue plaid pajama pants. If you have information about her location, call the Council Bluffs P-D at 712-328-4701.

Body found in Missouri River identified as Iowa woman

NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. (AP) — A woman who was found dead in the Missouri River near Nebraska City has been identified as a missing Iowa resident. The Nebraska State Patrol said Monday that 40-year-old Jennifer Giles of Council Bluffs was identified through dental records. A trapper found her body on Nov. 23 in an area north of an Omaha Public Power District power plant in southeast Nebraska.

Family members reported Giles’ disappearance to Council Bluffs police on Oct. 28. Authorities say autopsy results are pending. The Nebraska State Patrol is assisting Council Bluffs police with its investigation.

 

U. Iowa leader denounces racist vandalism in campus building

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The University of Iowa’s new president is condemning a racist remark that was carved into a bathroom door inside a campus building. Bruce Harreld said Monday evening the school was trying to determine who left the message in Spence Laboratories, the building that houses the university’s department of psychological and brain sciences.

Harreld says the act “is offensive to our community and will not be tolerated,” adding that the door was immediately sanded down to remove the comment. Interim UI public safety director David Visin says the remark was “a racial slur” that didn’t include any additional threatening language. He says he’s not releasing specifics in order to protect the integrity of an ongoing criminal investigation.

Visin says he is asking the public for help solving the crime.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Des Moines police say two people have been found dead in a house west of downtown but two children in the home weren’t injured. Sgt. Paul Parizek told the Des Moines Register police received a report of a shooting just before 3 p.m. Monday. Two unidentified adults were found dead in the home. An infant and toddler in the house weren’t harmed.

CLEAR LAKE, Iowa (AP) — A fire at a Clear Lake warehouse caused significant damage to the structure and sent a plume of smoke high above the northern Iowa city. About two dozen firefighters from Clear Lake and Ventura were called to the fire at NTI Limited. The company sells axles, tires and wheels for trailers.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration is boosting the amount of corn-based ethanol and other renewable fuels in the U.S. gasoline supply. That’s despite sustained opposition by an unusual alliance of oil companies, environmentalists and some GOP presidential candidates. The Environmental Protection Agency announced a rule to increase production of ethanol to be blended with gasoline through 2016, a decision that could reverberate in Iowa’s crucial presidential caucuses.

LARCHWOOD, Iowa (AP) — The small towns of Larchwood and Lester in northwest Iowa are exploring whether to establish their own municipal gas utilities. The Sioux City Journal reports voters approved the idea this month after people in both communities were hit by high propane prices.

2 Atlantic residents arrested on drug charges

Two people were arrested Saturday on drug charges, in Cass County. The Sheriff’s Office reports 30-year old Benjamin Daniel Jobe, of Atlantic, was arrested on charges of OWI 2nd Offense, Possession of Marijuana 2nd Offense, and Driving While Revoked. Jobe was taken to the Cass County Jail and released later that day on his own recognizance. And, 19-year old Selena Marie Hansen, of Atlantic, was arrested Saturday on a District Court warrant for Failure to Appear and charges of Possession of Methamphetamine and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. She was taken to the Cass County Jail where she was released later that day on $1,300 bond.

In an unrelated incident, 31-year old Ehren Michael Mardesen, of Anita, was arrested Saturday on two counts of Violation of a No Contact Order. Mardesen was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released Sunday on his own recognizance. And, 21-year old Keith Anthony Stinson, of Aurora, CO, was arrested Sunday on a charge of Carrying Weapons (Aggravated). Stinson was taken to the Cass County Jail and released Monday on $2,000 bond.

The Small Business Saturday Campaign kicked off two weeks ago with Selfies for Support and continued through Small Business Saturday. Over 175 selfies for support were posted to social media supporting businesses in Atlantic. The Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce encouraged shoppers to post selfies to social media, the shopper with the most likes will receive $50 in AtlanticCash, along with selfie stick. The selfies for support winner will be announced on December 15th.

Over 30 businesses in Atlantic participated in Small Business Saturday event, with many participating in the passport to Atlantic. The shopping incentive offered stamps to shoppers for purchases and selfies for support. Completed passports with six stamps will be entered into a drawing for $200 in AtlantiCash. If you have completed passports please submit to the Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce by December 4th to be entered into the grand prize drawing.

Afton man arrested on warrant for FTA on Theft charge

Afton Police Chief John Coulter reports officers with the Afton Police Department arrested 32-year old Michael Leonard Cooley Jr.,  of AftonAfton PD patch Cooley, Jr. was taken into custody Nov. 25th, on a Ringgold Co. Warrant for Failure to Appear on an original charge of Theft in the 5th degree  He was transported to the Ringgold County Jail and held on $300 bond.

Adair man arrested after making “crazy” statements

The Adair County Sheriff’s Office reports 30-year old Tyler Adam Oberholtz, of Adair, was arrested Nov. 23rd on charges of Harassment in the 2nd Degree, Criminal mischief in the 3rd degree, and criminal mischief in the 4th & 5th degrees. His arrest stemmed from a 9-1-1 call whereby the caller said the man was going “crazy,” by smashing-up his father’s home.

Oberholtz’ father told authorities his son believed the government was transmitting radio- and -microwave messages through the gold bridge of his father’s dental work, and had allegedly threatened to use a baseball bat to remove the dental work from his father’s mouth. The other charges stem from damage perpetrated on water meters in Fontanelle and Greenfield, and striking  a tail light of a vehicle in Greenfield with a baseball bat. Tyler Oberholtz was being held in the Adair County Jail on $2,000 bond.

In other news, the Adair County Sheriff’s Office reports 29-year old Tanner Johnson Heck, of Lakewood, CO., was arrested last Friday morning at the Budget Inn, in Adair, after he allegedly punched a hole in a wall at the motel. The damage was estimated at less than $200. Heck was charged with Criminal Mischief in the 5th degree, plead guilty, and was released Saturday, after serving required time in jail.

A woman from Des Moines was arrested just after midnight, Saturday, on assault and disorderly conduct charges. Authorities say 44-year old Elizabeth Cheryl Onthank allegedly committed assault in the Stuart McDonald’s parking lot, by grabbing the hair of her victim and throwing that person to the ground, leaving a visible mark on their leg. She also is alleged to have made a loud and raucous noise while in the vicinity of a public building. Onthank was later released from the Adair County Jail on $1,000 bond.
