It was a cold start to the golf meet today. Gloves and a hat were a must. We knew conditions would be tough, but had to get in a good mind set to play today. Travis played very well in the cold today. A one over 72 is a great score. Sam Markham got his first birdie, actually had 3 today. Great score of 74. Evan also played pretty solid. He was disappointed though. Felt he didn’t hit it that well. Ben, Nick and Sam Renaud struggled some but did finish pretty well.

This was a great week for the boys!!!

Cardinals nip Brewers 2-0, spoil Lohse’s return

April 13th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Rookie Shelby Miller allowed one hit in seven innings, a single by Norichika Aoki to open the game, and the St. Louis Cardinals had just enough to spoil Kyle Lohse’s first start as a visitor since 2007 in a 2-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday night. David Freese had an RBI single at the end of a three-hit flurry to open the second and Yadier Molina hit his second homer in the seventh for the Cardinals, who have allowed one run during a three-game winning streak.

Lohse, a 16-game winner whom the Cardinals did not attempt to re-sign, allowed two runs in seven innings while throwing 82 pitches. Miller (2-0) had a career-best eight strikeouts in his third career start.

Council Bluffs RAGBRAI website online

News, Sports

April 12th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

The Council Bluffs local RAGBRAI committee has announced that www.councilbluffsragbrai.com is online!  The public is invited to log onto the website for information.  Pat Barton and Geoff Hubbard have spent many hours assembling the details you’ll find on the site.  Barry Cleaveland, Executive Committee Chairperson, is encouraging residents of the community to log on, because they are looking for housing and volunteers from the community.  The website, he says, is a resource of information for residents as well as for riders.

Included on the website are Mayor Tom Hanafan’s welcome letter, and tabs for camping information, housing, long term parking, vendor and volunteer information.  In addition, there’s a space for ordering the 2013 Council Bluffs official RAGBRAI T-shirt on the website. Kathy Fiscus, Chair of Publicity for Council Bluffs RAGBRAI, says “The unusual and highly desirable shirt includes a solar sensitive panel.” Fiscus says “The Council Bluffs official RAGBRAI pig riding a bicycle expands into many colorful panels of the pig when the shirt is exposed to sunlight.”   The theme, “Wild Ride for Your Hide” is printed on the front.  A slice of bacon with the phrase, “Sizzle In Your Seat” is printed in color on the back.

While www.councilbluffsragbbrai.com is a work in progress, the public is invited to log on now and return several times for updated information.  Riders for the event will be in town July 19-20, with the official Council Bluffs departure and start of the ride across Iowa early Sunday morning, July 21.

Bobcat trapping quota may be lifted

Ag/Outdoor, Sports

April 12th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

An Iowa State University ecologist is unsure how many more people might start hunting bobcats if the Iowa Department of Natural Resources decides to go ahead with a proposal to lift the seasonal quota for the cats. This D-N-R allowed hunters to trap 450 bobcats in Iowa this past season in a limit determined by population data and reproduction rates for the cats. I-S-U professor Bill Clark is one of the people that help gather the data. “I think one of the reasons they chose to propose that is that in practical terms, it’s difficult to regulate,“ Clark says. The season runs until the quota is reached and any bobcats caught after that must be returned to the D-N-R.

“So, one justification in their mind is well, we should just allow the trapper to keep those animals, and if they decide to sell the fur or have a mount made that’s not a waste of the resource,” according to Clark. He says it’s hard to predict if the number of bobcat hunters would increase without a cap, but says he thinks if the season gets out of hand, the D-N-R would reinstate the quota. Clark made his comments on Iowa Public Radio’s “Talk of Iowa” program.

Rookie backup batting .643 for Cardinals

Sports

April 12th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — If St. Louis Cardinals rookie Matt Adams had enough at-bats to qualify for the league leaders, he’d be ahead by nearly 200 points. Since earning one of the final roster spots in spring training, the 24-year-old backup first baseman has maximized just 14 trips to the plate with two homers, seven RBIs and a ridiculous .643 batting average.

Adams’ first career pinch-hit homer was the go-ahead hit in a victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday. He added another two-run homer and RBI double on Wednesday. After Adams made the team, manager Mike Matheny said he’d try to give the former 23rd-round draft pick a couple starts a week. Regular first baseman Allen Craig got a day off Wednesday and also can play the corner outfield spots.

Alford apologizes for handling of Iowa incident

Sports

April 12th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

LOS ANGELES (AP) — New UCLA basketball coach Steve Alford is apologizing for the way he handled a sexual assault charge involving a player on his team in 2002 when he coached at Iowa. Alford says he “instinctively and mistakenly” came to the defense of Hawkeyes player Pierre Pierce before he knew all the facts. Pierce pleaded guilty to a charge of assault involving injury. He was kicked off the Iowa team in 2005 after another incident involving an ex-girlfriend.

Alford says he is apologizing for publicly proclaiming Pierce’s innocence before the legal process had run its course. He says his reaction was inappropriate and insensitive to the female victim. Alford says he’s learned and grown from that experience, and he wants the UCLA community to know that he would handle the situation differently today.

Alford made his comments in a statement distributed Thursday through UCLA.
