Iowa State Visits Tulsa Tonight

Sports

September 26th, 2013 by Jim Field

If familiarity breeds contempt then Thursday night’s matchup between Iowa State and Tulsa should feature plenty of intensity. It will be the teams third meeting in a little more than a year and last December the Golden Hurricane beat the Cyclones 31-17 in the Liberty Bowl.

ISU coach Paul Rhoads hopes quarterback Sam Richardson’s ankle has healed up enough to make him more of a factor in the running game. Richardson has only 86 yards in the first two games.

Rhoads says a concern for the Cyclone defense is the big play ability of Tulsa leading rusher and receiver Trey Watts.

At 0-2 this is a big game for the Cyclones.

Tulsa coach Bill Blankenship says these are not the same teams that played last December.

Tulsa rushed for more than 300 yards in their Liberty Bowl victory but they are averaging only 120 on the ground this season.

It is a 6:30 kickoff on Thursday night.

Cardinals Win 4-1, Sweep Nats to Close in on Title

Sports

September 26th, 2013 by Jim Field

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Rookie Shelby Miller won his 15th game, and Yadier Molina had the go-ahead hit for the St. Louis Cardinals, who wrapped up a three-game sweep of the Washington Nationals and moved another step closer to the NL Central title with a 4-1 victory on Wednesday.

Jordan Zimmermann missed his only shot at 20 wins, allowing four runs in seven innings. The Nationals had five hits one day after breaking up rookie Michael Wacha’s bid for a no-hitter in the ninth inning.

Matt Adams hit his eighth home run since replacing injured Allen Craig and doubled for the Cardinals, who led the Pirates by 2½ games with three games to go. The Reds lost 1-0 to the Mets on Wednesday and were eliminated from the divisional race.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa has stayed healthy this season and found some playmakers, key developments in the team’s improvement.

The Hawkeyes (3-1) scored four touchdowns on returns last week in a 59-3 win over Western Michigan, highlighting their new-found explosiveness heading into Saturday’s game at Minnesota (4-0).

Wacha Flirts With No-Hitter, Cards Win

Sports

September 25th, 2013 by admin

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Cardinals rookie Michael Wacha lost his no-hit bid on Ryan Zimmerman’s infield single with two outs in the ninth inning, and St. Louis beat the Washington Nationals 2-0 Tuesday night to close in on the NL Central title.

Making his ninth career start, Wacha came about as close as possible to finishing off the third no-hitter in the majors this season. Instead, he became the third pitcher to have a bid broken up with one out to go.

Zimmerman hit a chopper just over Wacha’s glove – the pitcher said he thought it nicked his mitt – and the ball bounced slowly toward shortstop. A charging Pete Kozma grabbed it with his bare hand and whipped a throw to first that was a little wide, pulling Matt Adams off the bag just as Zimmerman arrived.

Chiefs Getting Off to Fast Starts this Season

Sports

September 24th, 2013 by Jim Field

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are all about fast starts these days.

They’ve started fast in games, taking the lead in the first quarter of each of them, and carrying that advantage into halftime twice. And they’ve started fast on the season, beating the Jaguars, Cowboys and Eagles to surpass their win total from all of last year.

While that may seem like something to scoff about so early in the season, consider that Kansas City never led a game in regulation until Week 9 a year ago.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid insisted that he’d rather score most than first, but he also said there’s value in getting on the board early. It helps build confidence while also allowing a team to settle in for the rest of the game.
