Iowa Awarded 2017 Solheim Cup

Sports

September 23rd, 2013 by Jim Field

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The LPGA announced Monday that the 2017 Solheim Cup will be held at the Des Moines Golf and Country Club in Iowa.

The biennial event, which is similar to the Ryder Cup pitting European and American golfers, was held in Colorado last month. Europe won 18-10.

The Des Moines Golf and Country Club hosted the U.S. Senior Open Championship in 1999, drawing more than 250,000 fans. Metro Des Moines has also hosted a Champions Tour event, the Principal Charity Classic, since 2001.

Though that tournament moved from Glen Oaks Country Club in West Des Moines to the Wakonda Club near downtown Des Moines this year, it remained among the more well-attended events on the senior tour.

Cardinals Sloppy in Loss to Brewers Sunday

Sports

September 23rd, 2013 by admin

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Norichika Aoki scored three times and doubled home a run, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat sloppy St. Louis 6-4 on Sunday night, hours after the Cardinals clinched a playoff berth.

Wily Peralta (11-15) gave up five hits and walked five in five-plus innings for the Brewers. The Cardinals put the go-ahead run at the plate with two outs in the ninth, but closer Jim Henderson got slugger Matt Adams to strike out to end the game and earn his 26th save.

St. Louis learned earlier Sunday it was assured of at least an NL wild card after Washington lost.

However, the Cardinals weren’t sharp on the field. Starter Joe Kelly (9-5) had one of two errors in the Brewers’ two-run second.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have clinched a playoff spot for the third straight year.

Washington’s 4-2 loss to Miami in a doubleheader opener Sunday assured the Cardinals of at least an NL wild-card berth.

St. Louis began the day with a two-game NL Central lead over second-place Pittsburgh and a three-game margin over Cincinnati. The Cardinals played Sunday night at Milwaukee.

Cards Keep Lead Saturday

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Matt Carpenter broke Stan Musial’s team record for doubles by a left-handed batter in a season, Lance Lynn won for the first time since early August and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 7-2 Saturday night to maintain a two-game lead in the NL Central.

Seeking their first division title since 2009, the Cardinals (91-64) have surged ahead of Pittsburgh (89-66) and Cincinnati (88-67), which dropped three games back with a 4-2 loss in Pittsburgh.

St. Louis would clinch a playoff spot for the third straight postseason if the Washington Nationals lost to the Miami Marlins later Saturday in a game delayed by rain at the start. The Cardinals have won for the 12th time in 17 games and improved to 14-4 against the Brewers this year, including 8-1 in Milwaukee.

Carpenter’s fifth-inning double was his 54th of the season, one more than Musial’s total in 1953.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Kevonte Martin-Manley returned back-to-back punts for touchdowns; B.J. Lowery returned a pair of interceptions for TDs and Iowa rolled past Western Michigan 59-3 on Saturday. The Hawkeyes (3-1) now enter Big Ten play with a three-game winning streak, their longest since 2010. Martin-Manley scored on returns of 83 and 63 yards early in the second quarter as Iowa jumped out to a 38-3 halftime lead.

Lowery took back picks for 35 and 13-yard TDs for Iowa, which scored its most points since it had 62 against Northwestern in 2002.  Tyler Van Tubbergen had 114 yards passing for the Broncos (0-4).

GREELEY, Colo. (AP) – Sawyer Kollmorgen led Northern Iowa to a runaway 32-7 win over Northern Colorado on Saturday, throwing for 242 yards and a touchdown. Kollmorgen connected with Chad Owens for a 7-yard touchdown late in the first quarter to give Northern Iowa (3-0) a lead it would hold over Northern Colorado (1-3) for the rest of the game.

Darius Graham cut Northern Colorado’s lead to 13-7 in the third quarter with a 4-yard touchdown run. But Northern Iowa responded on the following possession with an 86-yard scoring drive, culminating in an 18-yard touchdown run by David Johnson. Johnson finished with 121 yards rushing, while Tyler Sievertson kicked four field goals and Diondre Hall returned a fourth-quarter interception 40 yards for a touchdown.

Northern Colorado’s offense struggled. Tim Tancik, who threw for 209 yards, was picked off twice by the Panthers. Tromaine Dennis rushed for 71 yards on 15 carries.

Iowa officials monitor conditions for duck season

Ag/Outdoor, Sports

September 21st, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa officials say several factors will determine if hunters have a successful early duck season. The state Department of Natural Resources says seasonal wetlands are largely dry, and there may not be enough to support a boat for hunters.

Officials say it’s unclear whether blue-winged teal will stick around, though they do favor shallow water. Hunters can use a wetland habitat condition report to prepare for marsh conditions or to change their hunting location.

The early duck season runs from Saturday through Wednesday. The second duck season begins on different dates in October depending on zones. Nearly 30,000 hunters are expected to hunt waterfowl in Iowa.
