Wainwright, Peralta pace Cardinals past Pirates

Sports

April 27th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Adam Wainwright became the majors’ first five-game winner and Jhonny Peralta ended the St. Louis Cardinals’ 366 at-bat homerless drought with a pair of long balls and four RBIs in a 7-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday.

Matt Holliday, Allen Craig and Yadier Molina also had RBIs for the Cardinals, who totaled five runs in their previous four games. St. Louis took two of three from the Pirates, shutting them out in both wins.

Edinson Volquez (1-2) gave up six runs in 5 2-3 innings for Pittsburgh, which has dropped five of six. His day unraveled after the Pirates’ appeal of a potential double-play ball was denied and first baseman Ike Davis’ foot was ruled off the bag.

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Gaby Sanchez had two RBIs in a four-run fourth inning and the Pittsburgh Pirates bullpen worked seven strong innings after starter Francisco Liriano left with flu-like symptoms and dizziness in a 6-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday.

Matt Holliday had an RBI double for the Cardinals, who have mustered five runs in their last six games. They got three hits and a run in seven innings off five Pittsburgh relievers.

Yadier Molina was a bust on his jersey giveaway day, striking out with the bases loaded to end the third against Stolmy Pimentel (2-0) and popping out with runners on second and third to end the fifth against Jared Hughes. He entered batting .431 during a 15-game hitting streak.

Tyler Lyons (0-2) took the loss.

Iowa leaves spring strong at RB

April 26th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Iowa is operating from a rare position of strength at running back.
Not only do the Hawkeyes have a stable of capable backs, they’re nearly all healthy heading into the summer.

Iowa took it easy on its three top backs – starters Mark Weisman and Jordan Canzeri and third-down back Damon Bullock – and as a result they should all be fresh for fall camp in three months. The Hawkeyes gave many of the carries those backs would have gotten to a host of youngsters, including LeShun Daniels, Jonathan Parker and Barkley Hill.

Coach Kirk Ferentz says Bullock, Daniels and Canzeri have all improved during spring practice, which wrapped up Saturday with a scrimmage at Kinnick Stadium.

Iowa baseball museum struggles when namesake dies

Sports

April 26th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

VAN METER, Iowa (AP) — Just three years after the death of former Cleveland Indians star Bob Feller, the Iowa museum built to honor the former Indians star finds itself gasping for life. Although officials are working toward a solution they believe will best appease the city, the Feller Museum board and the Indians, it’s clear that the museum will never be the same.

The museum shuttered its doors this winter because of an outdated business model led to major financial issues. The museum re-opened earlier this month with a scaled-down Friday to Sunday schedule. But officials aren’t certain it can make it through the end of September without a more permanent solution.
