Iowa State dismisses DT Rodney Coe

Sports

March 13th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State defensive tackle Rodney Coe has been kicked off the team. Cyclones spokesman Mike Green says Coe has been dismissed for violating team rules. Coe started Iowa State’s final four games in 2013 and finished with 37 tackles. Coe would have been a senior in 2014, and he was expected to be a veteran leader for Iowa State’s inexperienced defense.

The Cyclones return a pair of starting linemen in Cory Morrissey and David Irving, and sophomores Pierre Aka and Devlyn Cousin are the likely candidates to replace Coe at tackle.

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Lance Lynn rebounded from a poor outing to strike out his final eight batters and 10 overall in four innings Thursday during the St. Louis Cardinals’ 11-0 win over the Atlanta Braves. Lynn ended his stint by fanning Justin Upton, Evan Gattis and Chris Johnson.

Lynn had allowed five runs in 1 1-3 innings of relief against Miami in his previous appearance. On Thursday he allowed only one hit and walked none. He got a strikeout on every type of pitch other than his curveball. Atlanta starter Freddy Garcia gave up four runs — three earned — and six hits in four innings.

Matt Holliday and Yadier Molina hit RBI doubles in the first, and Jhonny Peralta’s two-out double drove in Holliday in the third. Xavier Scruggs hit a three-run double in a seven-run sixth.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Melvin Ejim had 24 points and 10 rebounds, Dustin Hogue added 19 points and 10 boards and No. 16 Iowa State held on through a tense final minute to beat Kansas State 91-85 in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 tournament. Georges Niang added 18 points and Naz Long finished with 14 points for the fourth-seeded Cyclones (24-7), who advanced to play the winner of Kansas-Oklahoma State in Friday’s semifinals.

Iowa State was clinging to an 87-85 lead with just over a minute left when Ejim missed a layup and the Wildcats (20-12) got the rebound. They raced the other direction, but Shane Southwell lost control of the ball going toward the rim and Iowa State came away with it.

Long was fouled and made both free throws with 16.2 seconds left. Marcus Foster missed a 3 at the other end, and Long scored a layup in transition to put an exclamation mark on the win.

Regents name Iowa football facilities after donors

March 13th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa football team’s new indoor practice building and operations center will be named after some of the program’s biggest donors. The Iowa Board of Regents agreed Wednesday to name the indoor practice facility to honor Stew and LeNore Hansen, who donated $8 million to the program’s fundraising campaign. Stew Hansen is the former president of a namesake Des Moines car dealership that was sold in 2006.

The regents also named the football operations building, which is under construction, after Richard O. Jacobson, chairman emeritus of the Jacobson Companies. Jacobson has supported the Hawkeyes for decades and donated millions to a number of university programs.

The building will include space for team activities, a strength and conditioning area, locker rooms, and office space for coaches and support staffs.

Chiefs Land Linebacker Mays, O-lineman Linkenbach

Sports

March 13th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs signed linebacker Joe Mays and offensive lineman Joe Linkenbach on Wednesday, while also confirming the signing of defensive back and special teams standout Husain Abdullah. Linkenbach joined the Colts as an undrafted free agent in 2010, and started all 16 games the following season. He only started eight games in 2012 and five last season.

His ability to play tackle and guard on both sides of the line made him appealing to the Chiefs, who lost left tackle Branden Albert and guards Jon Asamoah and Geoff Schwartz on Tuesday. Mays could take the place of Akeem Jordan, who also became a free agent. He was drafted by current Chiefs coach Andy Reid when he was in Philadelphia in 2008.

Abdullah had agreed to a contract on Tuesday.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) — Kolten Wong hit a two-run homer for the second straight day, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the New York Mets 6-4 Wednesday. Juan Lagares had a two-run single for the Mets.

Cardinals starter Carlos Martinez, competing to be in the club’s starting rotation, allowed two hits in four scoreless innings and struck out three. Mets starter John Lannan, a non-roster invitee competing to be New York’s fifth starter, gave up two runs — both unearned — and three hits in four innings. He struck out five and walked none.

March 12th, 2014 by Jim Field

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State senior Melvin Ejim has been named a United State Basketball Writers Association Second-Team All-American, the organization announced Wednesday. Ejim is also a finalist for the Oscar Robertson Trophy, which is presented by the USBWA.

It is the second All-America honor for Ejim, who was recognized as an NBCSports.com third-team pick on Monday. Ejim is the first USBWA All-American for Iowa State since Jamaal Tinsley in 2001.

Ejim, a forward from Toronto, Ontario, averaged 18.2 points and 8.6 rebounds en route to being named the Big 12 Player of the Year. Ejim has scored in double figures in 25 of the 28 games he’s played this season, including a Big 12 record 48 points against TCU.

In the regular-season finale against Oklahoma State, Ejim became just the fourth player in Big 12 history to score 1,500 points and grab 1,000 rebounds.

Ejim and teammate DeAndre Kane were also named All-District 8 First Team by the National Association of Basketball Coaches on Wednesday.
