ATLANTA (AP) – St. Louis Cardinals left-hander Jaime Garcia does not appear seriously injured after being struck on the elbow by a pitch during a rehab start in the minors. General manager John Mozeliak said Monday that Garcia had some significant swelling right after the game, but it had “gone down quite a bit” by morning.

Garcia has been on the DL all season with an injured shoulder. He was hit on the left elbow while batting Sunday with Double-A Springfield, forcing him out of the game after two innings and 28 pitches. Speaking before the Cardinals played in Atlanta, Mozeliak said Garcia may just need a few days off. The team is hoping he can pitch again by next Sunday or Monday.

ATLANTA (AP) — Matt Carpenter’s two-run double in the fifth inning helped carry the St. Louis Cardinals past the slumping Atlanta Braves, who shook up their lineup but still lost their seventh in a row, 4-3 Monday night. Desperate for more offense, Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez batted pitcher Aaron Harang eighth and put second baseman Ramiro Pena in the ninth spot.

Jake Auerbach, a 2013 Atlantic High School graduate, placed sixth in the decathlon at the Great Plains Athletic Conference Track & Field Championships held at Doane College in Crete, Nebraska.  Auerbach is in his first year competing for Northwestern College in Orange City.

He ran the 100 meters in a time of :11.85, he long jumped 5.72 meters, threw the shot put 10.02m (32′ 10.5″), high jumped 1.82m (5′ 11.5″), ran the 400 meters in :52.87, ran the 110 meter hurdles in 18.23, threw the discus 28.59m (93′ 9″), pole vaulted 3.38m (11′ 1″), threw the javelin 42.77m (140′ 4″), and ran the 1500 meters in 4:49:08.

Auerbach totaled 5522 points and placed 6th in the conference, making him an all conference decathlete.
